Default 2000 honda civic engine swap... What ecm do I need?

I have a 2000 honda civic ex, but it has a D16Z6 engine, so I am not sure what type of computer to put in the car. The one I have now says malfunction. I bought the car 10 days ago and I need to get the computer to work in order to get an inspection. Do I replace the computer for the type of engine, or do I get the same one as the old? Do you think the engine swap is the cause of the computer malfunction?

P28.
I don't know where you live but older engines in a newer chassis is illegal.

What ECU is in it now?

37820-P2P-A92 is in there now, but it is reading malfunctions. I am in North Carolina. Not sure about the law.

Honestly, I don't think my check engine light is working. 4 days ago, the scanner was showing that the computer was not reading anything, so we reset that code and I drove it for 50 miles and when I had it scanned at advance auto parts, it was showing that there was an error in the computer. There were a few other things on the report, but the guy said that we couldn't really tell what was correct beause of the internal error in the ecm. I am sure that I will need to replace the ecm. Is the P28 the correct ecm to buy?

P28 is for sure the correct ECU for the z6...which wiring harness did you use?

When you start the car does the CEL come one briefly? If not change out the bulb.

The P28 is OBD1 and is the ECU that runs your Z6 engine which is also OBD1. However wait for a few more comments from people that are more experienced with swaps than me respond before you run out and buy anything.

I have not touched the ecu yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Do I need to replace the wiring harness? I will work on replacing the CEL bulb.

Is there any way to check to make sure that the ECU needs to be replaced. I would think that it might be somewhat good if the car is running properly. There doesn't seem to be any issues with the engine.

The P2P ECU is for the D16Y8 OBD2 engine. Check for a working CEL before you do anything.

Ok, but I will have to get it tomorrow as soon as I come home from work. Also, I am going to have to learn how to fix it real quick. No problem, should be fun.

You need a p28...no questions about it...

I would use the proper wiring harness as well. It will make life alot easier. If you use the p2p...as grumblemarc mentioned it's for the y8. You will throw codes for all kinds of stuff...it might run, but it's a horrible idea. You'll probably throw a code for the evap canister, and I'm not sure if the z6 had a knock sensor or not so you might throw one for that...either way it doesn't matter...get a p28. It's WAAAAAAAAAAY more flexible than the p2p anyways. If you EVER plan on expanding, most people get a chipped p28 anyways. You can chip an obd1 ecu, obd2b is pretty much useless for expansion.

You won't pass in NC with a P28 ECU, I live in Charlotte, NC and the inspection for 96up is based on OBD2 port scanning. The reason its throwing a check engine light is for a few reasons I'm assuming:

1. The Z6 doesn't have a CKF sensor by the crank pulley. You can bypass this or swap over oil pumps, crank pulley and associated sensor from a Y8. Bypassing it will be the easiest. Heres the link:
http://www.ff-squad.com/technet/ckftrick.htm

2. Knock sensor and evap as stated above

3. Not sure what distributor they used as the Y8 dizzy doesn't exactly bolt up right to the Z6 head.

4. You need to get the check engine light pulled again and or try another known working P2P ECU.

^ Interesting to know...didn't know they had an inspection like that in NC. Would it be advantageous at all to put a y8 head on?

All of this is new to me. I feel overwhelmed. You are not too far from here. How much would you charge me to come down and take a look at it for me this weekend? How much would you need to fix the problem after I pay for the parts? I'm in Monroe.

I'll actually be in Chapel Hill this weekend, but in the meantime try another autozone and get them to write down the check engine codes, should be something like P0420 for example and then we can see what you're working with. But no unfortunately most of the issues are in the block (knock sensor, CFK sensor). I mean honestly if you can start looking around for a Y8 engine, it'll probably be the easiest thing and you can just sell off the Z6.

If I go ahead and buy a chipped p28 ecu and a wiring harness and wire the CKF Bypass, what problems do you think that I will run into? I don't have the time or money to get a new engine.

This is driving me crazy. I wish it were easier. Any suggestions on where to buy and what to buy? Trying to save money, but I want to buy the right stuff. 2000 honda civic ex, was a d16y8 and now it is a d16z6 and I am converting the ecu to a p28, hoping to get a little closer to "right". What harnesses? and does anyone have a suggestion for where to buy the ECU?

You can not pass emissions with a P28, in NC they plug in the OBD2 port and if you have an OBD1 ECU it will fail automatically. I used to be a state inspector so I know this. Now if you know someone who will pass it regardless I can help but other wise swapping in the P28 will make the CEL go away but it won't pass an emissions test. If you even have a check engine light at all for 96up it automatically fails no questions asked.

The Y8 head and P2P ECU is sounding good right about now.

^ yep. You can get a y8 head for almost the same price you would get a chipped p28 for...and it'll give you a good opportunity to do some preventive maintenance. You can still keep the p2p, all the sensors minus the CKF should work properly, and you will pass inspection. I believe there is, or can easily be made, a spot for the knock sensor on the z6 block. It'll take a little bit of research for you if you don't know what you're doing, but everything that's worth doing will require research.
