Default 2000 EX Check Engine Light - Girlfriend is Panicking

My girlfriends 2000 EX Sedan has just turned 140,000 miles and the check engine light came on yesterday. From reading the owners manual, it sounds like an emissions issue and doesn't seem to be too serious if you ask me. Well she is panicking and wanting to have it checked out immediately. I think we can wait a few days. To ease her mind, what are the most common things this light could be? I am thinking O2 sensor, or possibly the catalytic converter. What else is likely that it could be?

Thanks

Joe

It could be a gas cap for all we know. Check for codes.

At 140K if you've had no other major problems, it's probably O2, catalytic converter, or gas cap.

Most parts stores (like Autozone) will let you borrow or rent a tester that will tell you what code the CEL is throwing. If you tell us that, we could probably help you more.

or you can jump the service connector and count the blinks. either way, we need to know that code. it could be anything...

Yea, check the code. There are write-ups all over here. It's really easy to do. If it's something minor and you want to make her at ease until you can fix it, just remove the CEL bulb on the cluster.

start with the gas cap if its not tightened all the way it will throw a code make sure its tight and reset the ECU or just disconect to battery for like 5min

The gas cap was the first thing we checked. I might take it to Autozone and see what they say about the codes.

I think I could figure out how to check the codes since I am familiar with doing that on Mr2s. I will probably see if Autozone can't tell me if they do it for free.

I will keep you updated.

Thanks

Civics don't have CEL from the gas cap. I fill mine up while its running and have never gotten a CEL from it.

But my EGR valve is clogged on my HX. The light came on at about 170K. But I am swapping in a LS-T soon, so who cares.

You're not serious are you? Cause you DEFINITELY can get a CEL from a gas cap.

So does that automatically mean Hondas can't get CEL's from gas caps?

My girlfriend doesn't ever drive the car hard. I would be more likely to drive it a little bit harder but nothing out of control.

Anyways, I went to Autozone and had them check the code. Here are the findings

P1457
Unable to obtain vacuum in tank

I wasn't quite sure what that means and the at autozone said it sound like a stuck valve which I don't quite understand from the code message.

So now that I have some more concrete info, can anyone tell me what that code really is?

Thanks

Joe

get out of the car is going to blow . just playing

p1457 is a evap code where it sounds like you left the gas cap loose at some point .reset your code drive it around for minimum 5 days or unless c.e.l comes back on .if it does replace gas cap or pressure test cap for proper sealing
