Re: 2000 civic ex!!!!
It is not true, unless the GSR ECU came with a motor too.
As for VTEC not engaging, do you have any check engine lights, low oil, and the correct ("P2P" labeled) ECU in the car?

no, on the contrary, you'll blow your motor....
and dont take it lightly, you will kill your motor
lol hell am i kidding , the car wont even turn on
you need a compatible ecu with your motor, just cant throw a different ecu from a faster motor onto yours.
you CAN chip your ecu, and remove the rev limiter, make the vtec switch over at an early rpm etc etc

LOL Okay i thought so.. and my car runs fine no low oil, no check engine lights and i dont know about the p2p i will check it out. I have another question also. is a b20 block with a b16 head a good swap just for a overall power increase just trying to go faster but not spend alot of money?

Re: 2000 civic ex!!!!
yes a b20 with b16 head will do pretty damn good, only for a while tho, if you dont build the block do take highier rpms youll blow it.
do some reserach, a ls or b20 vtec is a tickng time bomb if its not properly built

^^ yes you can, but your going to want to get a obd1 ecu, they are alot easier to tune.
Linked, you can and the car will run,
my buddy put his chipped p28 for his b16 on his d16 and it ran, hit vtec and all.

Re: 2000 civic ex!!!!
At what point would u wanna run a b-series ecu if u have a functioning ecu for that motor. To me it seems like a waste of time and money. What do I know tho. Just see absolutely no real good purpose.

Re: 2000 civic ex!!!!
Dude there are way too many reasons NOT to attempt to put a b series ecu on your d16. If you want more power try a few bolt-ons. You're not going to get alot out of a sohc without spending a bucket of money and/or boosting it anyway. As for your vtec, I have a '00 ex and believe me it's not that impressive at 5500 rpm either...

Re: 2000 civic ex!!!!
yeah... D16's are just unimpressive regardless, I've spent money on bolt ons for mine... not really worth it, save it for a swap or turbo or just settle for your 110 hp and 40 mpg

Re: 2000 civic ex!!!!
part for part.. d16y8 is cheaper and more powerful from the 200+ hp range.. until about 300.. if you want a relative easy, cheap, and faster car.. stick with sohc, but if you wanna go faster.. go with a b series

Re: 2000 civic ex!!!!
Thanks for all the replies... Its just im trying to save for a swap but i dont know what the different motors have to offer. For Instance
The LS swap what is its benefits also what tranny would/could be used
The b16 swap what is its benefits
The b18 swap what is its benefits
The b20/b16 swap what is its benefits
Just the b20 vtch vs non vtech swap?
Wat is the best tranny to use?
Out of all the swaps which will give you the more significant gain in power and torque but wont hurt your pocket? I am looking for more power gains with no boost. I currently have the d16y8, which you all no.

Re: 2000 civic ex!!!!
As far as your question about relative pros and cons on the engines... it goes something like this: some have more horsepower, and are either more expensive, harder to swap, illegal, or all of the above.
here's a nonexhaustive list of engines from least to most desirable:
B18 (LS) / B20 (CRV): different engines. LS tends to be more reliable, B20 has more torque stock. B20 is technically illegal in a Civic in many places.
B16a: +/- 160HP. around 2500 from hmotors.
B18C1/2/3/4: +/-170-180 HP. more torque than B16. 2800-3200 from hmotors. Stock in Integra gsrs. Intake manifold not interchangable with other B series
H22: about 200 HP. Relatively cheap... maybe $1500-2000. Fairly difficult to swap since Civics were never intended to have H22s.
B16b: 185HP. not much more torque than B16a. Very expensive. Made to rev. $3500-4K from hmotors.
B18C5: 190HP. Stock in Integra Type R. Usually slightly cheaper than B16b, bit easier to find. $3400-3600 from hmotors.
K20/24: Plan to pay $8-10K. Lots of power, rare, but not worth the $$ IMO.
