Default 2000 Civic, dash lights not working.

Just bought the car yesterday, and am fighting with these lights.

When starting the car the oil icon etc light up for a second.

The square gear light (P, R, D) will be on until you turn the headlights on, when they go off.

I tried jumping across from the red to black wire on the connector behind the dimmer switch as I've read in other posts. No success, in fact it got worse.
Fuse #30 (7.5 amp) was blown after trying this jump, and was not prior.

Now that I've replaced this fuse the car has a very loud solid beep any time the key is removed and the fuse is in place.
So to reiterate - Fuse was fine, no loud beep, but no lights. Tried jumping solid red to solid black at plug for dimmer switch. Fuse blew. Replaced fuse and now a solid beep any time the key is removed, still no lights.

This car DOES have an aftermarket cd player.

I'm stuck, not sure what to try next.

So - the car has decided to stop the loud beep, just the normal 6 beeps, but no changes otherwise.

Are you sure they go off rather than just dim? When you turn on the lights, those lights dim so they're not too bright at night.

Now that I've replaced this fuse the car has a very loud solid beep any time the key is removed and the fuse is in place.
The ICU provides three different warning chimes - key in, seat belts, and lights on. Figure out which one.

I'm positive they are off rather than dim. Discovered this at night, and there is no light at all being emitted.
The other small icon lights like the seatbelt are on as per usual when they should be.

So the noise that was being made was the same as "lights on, key out" however the switch on the stick was set to off. That beep has ceased, although the lights remain not working.

Sounds like a bad light switch. Test it. See FAQs sticky.

does your srs light work with the key on? if not, they punched out the bulb. honda engineered these cars so that the illumination on the cluster won't work without an srs bulb.

The SRS light is on with the key on, so the previous folks didn't mess that up.

I'm getting 13v to the red and black at the dash rheostat, so I'm gonna order one today and see if you're right on the switch itself. I'm thinking you are. I'm certainly hoping.
