Default 1999 Civic Coupe Suspension General Questions...

Hello all, this is once again a thread regarding suspension.

So I dont know much (if at all) about suspension, however, I do know that the cheap 50 dollar ebay coilovers that my car came with are junk. I mean the bouncing is astrocious.

My birthday is coming up so I am in the market for a good setup. Running fairly simple 15 inch wheels, and will like to have the car low, but not to the point where I am scrapping or wheel rubbing. I do quite a bit of highway driving (the 60 freeway here in the IE is awful). My budget right now is about 400-500 (pushing it with the 500).

I have read that ground controls are clean for the coilovers, however, will it make a big different running GC/Koni shocks as opposed to running the ground controls on stock shocks? Should I upgrade my shocks? I might run into a budget problem, but what other setups (other than the one I just posted) would give me what I am looking for without straying too far from my budget?

Thanks a lot for all the help!

in that range you don't have a whole lot of options... Godspeed, maybe some used function forms, skunk2's, or teins.

the ground controls should be good enough for you..any lowered car should have upgraded shocks..if koni yellow is out your budget, check the pricing on these brands(kyb agx, bilstein, tokico blue & white) these shocks are cheaper than the koni's and the ground controls can be bought using one of these shock setups..hope this helps

What does clean for coilovers mean?

Anyways, If your planning to stay on stock shocks, you might as well stay with the no names you have now.

Reasons why. Your shocks are more than likely blown to hell. (terrible for ride quality/handling. The shocks will not be valved for those spring rates. Meaning, it will be bouncy as ****, just like the car is now....

Another reason, the koni shocks should be used with "koni Spec'" only GC's.
The ones that fit stock shocks are different.

There really is no reason to buy nice coilovers such as ground controls to just pair them with stock shocks.

For just a little less you can get Progress coilovers. Not as good as Koni/gc but still a great setup! Well worth the money if you ask me.

Or, you can do a simple lowering spring shock setup. You should be able to do with around 500.

I guess clean as in good? I have no idea what I was going for tbh, I was in a hurry lol.

anyways, with Progress would you recommend running Konis? And I take it Koni yellow are the gold standard for shocks in the Koni lineup, but what is the next best shock that won't break my bank (for any brand in this case)?

i was also thinking about lowering springs, but didn't know how the drop would be in terms of looks.

Thanks for help also!

Progress coilovers come with shocks.

Koni really is one of the best OTS shocks on the market. Next in line is Tokico illumnia. ( I'd group them right with Koni Sports)

How low are you looking to go?

I am lowered 2.5-3 and I have a 1 finger gap.

very cool, this seems to be in my price range, any recommendations on where to order from?

and currently 1 finger can barely fit in the front, but I am not really trying to stay this low. However, if I change my mind I would like to keep that option open to me to adjust.

Check the market place, there is someone that has it pretty cheap. But, really if you can wait, do it.

if you don't mind me asking, what made you choose the 350/350 as opposed to the 350/250 setup? I'm just reading the info on the page and it recommends the 350/250 for daily drivers. However, you're saying all the right things to make me sway towards the 350/350. Just wondering what the main difference is and my best option....

I'd go higher in front.

350R is a great mix of handling/comfort.

I have the 350/250. I think they are entirely too soft. If you don't push your car, for instance speed into sharper turns/twistys, then that setup is fine. 350/350 is a little firmer and will keep the car more neutral rather then the 350/250 that induces a little understeer. I would prefer a little stiffer handling on par with the Prelude I had and I got that with 450/450 (a different setup) which Progress doesn't offer.

so 350F/250R?? In other words the Progress Street performance?

Sorry, just being overly paranoid because this is a decent sized investment lol.

Jeez. What are your driving habits? Do you like to do some spirited driving? Get the 350/350. If you just want a little better handling with a small drop then get the 350/250.

no no, at Least 350 in the rear.

This is the 1 reason I don't like the Progress coilovers. They don't the spring rate choices that I would like.

I think the only other option is the 500/350

saw your prior post right after I posted mine.

Spirited driving is almost never. I floor it occasionally through straights but thats it, never making twisty turns or hitting corners hard. Just mainly highway since I commute close to 100 miles a day...

350/350 will suit that then. You just can't go too low.

350/250. Later you can order stiffer springs if you change your mind. If I drove like you I think I would be more than satisfied with that combo.

The drop you have on your car is my ideal height (not trying to snoop), so I won't be going that low....at least I dont think. Lol.

It drops you an automatic 1" due to the shortened shock body with them set at the very top. Another inch should be no problem.

Oh man, decisions decisions. A softer spring means more comfort at the loss of handling during turning?

Thank you. It's about 2.5-3"

Basicly yes. The softer, the more body roll. But one could fix this with the use of larger sway bars.

I run a 350 in rear, you will deffinetly feel it,but it's not back brakeing by any means. Deffinetly tolerable for most people on a daily driver.

my car is 650F 350R
