Default 1998 honda civic ex transmission selector issue

OK, I know this isn't the right year range, but didn't see one for one 2001 or earlier.

I have a 98 civic, the issue I'm have is the floor gear selector isn't putting me in the right gear.

when I got this car a couple months ago, the selector was stiff going from park to reverse. It took a little extra push or pull to go from p to r and r to p.

this last Wednesday when I got home I put car in park, but it was still in gear (forward). Pulled selector back to reverse then park , no change. When I tried to go into drive gears I was alright, but had to use the shift lock release to get back to park and remove key.

as it stands now I don't have access to park, reverse, neutral or d4. I have removed the entire center console to see if anything was interfering with the selector, but found nothing.

I can see where the cable comes in and goes to the selector. There is a connecter, a jam nut I'm guessing, on a threaded rod that runs back to the base of the selector.

I have loosened the jam nut and turned the connecter the same direction as the jam nut hoping that I was tightening it, taking out the slack. However after giving it several turns I've seen no improvement.

so at this point I have no clue what to do next.
I'm going to add a few pictures in a bit so someone can see what I have going on and have done

Sopunds like stretch cable or mounts for it are messed up. But go ask the people who know more about your year range

It is probably a bad cable if the nut was tight and something else made it go out of adjustment by itself. Also look at the transmission end for anything that may be loose or broken.

Copies of the service manual can be found around the Internet and you should read one to get the adjustment procedure.

Photos show what I've done. I removed all of the center covers, I saw a spot where I could maybe adjust or tighten the cable. Have done so, but nothing changed.
