1996 Civic DX transmission question
Hey guys,
I had to replace a 5 spd manual transmission in a 1996 DX. The original trans was a S40 stamped E7F. The "new" JDM transmission is a S40 stamped E5G.
My question is: do these have the same gear ratios? The guy at the trans shop kept stressing an S40, but I thought that was a family of transmissions. I told him I wanted an E7F because the DX coupe and DX hatchback have two different final drives. Am I correct here or is an S40 the same transmission wherever.

Re: 1996 Civic DX transmission question (SGVridgerunner)
S40 transmissions are 96+, S20 are 92-95, etc. I'm not 100% sure about the stamping though. I'll check some sources.

You couldn't tell any difference between the two transmissions?
