93 civic ex feels like it has 20hp
Hey everyone I'm new here, if this needs to be moved to the appropriate section then go ahead, I wasn't sure where to post. I live in MS and I am currently in college for auto tech but I'm having a problem I need advice on.
i have a 93 Civic ex with a d16z6 with 320k miles on it and randomly as I was driving it started missing terribly and then the rpms dropped and it died, I started it back up and it didn't die again but it felt very underpowered and wouldn't go over 50mph for the 2 hour ride home.. lately it will run okay for about 10minutes and then it will run like crap and it's very hard to get over 50mph and I have to rev it around 1k or so to keep it from dying SOMETIMES when coming to a stop and sometimes it won't die... and around 3500 rpm it backfires VERY BAD sometimes.... I've replaced the distributor rotor and cap, the fuel pump and filter, spark plugs and also checked the wires and they are good... what else could cause it to run like this? Sorry for the long first post..

Check timing as mentioned above, and make sure the distributor isn't clocked wrong (IE 180 degrees off).
Take the intake tube off and check the throttle body, make sure it's opening/closing properly. Try to check your actual fuel pressure at the rail too, and make sure your injectors aren't clogged.
Backfiring makes me think it's timing or fuel related. I'd check those areas first.

Thanks for the replies!
1) how do I check the timing?-looked up how so I think I'll be able to do that tomorrow morning..
2)I'll check the throttle body when I get off tonight.
3) I did replace the cap but i think it only goes on one way?
4) CEL does work but it won't store the codes... comes on 10-15sec after starting the car but won't stay on to check it...

Got the CEL code! It's for the crankshaft position sensor which I read is in the distributor and no other way to replace it but replace the whole distributor so I just ordered one and it should be here in a couple days and I'll let y'all know if that fixes it! I really hope so! Thanks for the tips and especially the CEL trick!
