1992 honda civic failed CA smog test, HC too high! I need help!!
Hey everyone, so basically I went in to get a smog test and failed bad. Everything passed but the emissions part. I have a 1992 honda civic 1.6L 4cylinders. I am need help on what these numbers mean since the last time I failed my smog test was just cuz i just got the car and the timing was off. I changed the oil, changed spark plugs, I have had to replace a water pump some time ago and a o ring that went out. I have heard that I should sea foam it out or go get a higher number gasoline. Any ideas on what could be wrong and how I can pass?
%CO2 %O2 HC(PPM) CO (%) NO(PPM)
TEST RPM MEAS MEAS MAX AVE MEAS MAX AVE MEAS MAX AVE MEAS
15mph 1978 14.5 0.0 94 40 188 0.57 0.12 0.43 835 309 841
25MPH 1908 14.5 0.0 73 31 111 0.48 0.09 0.52 774 223 387
Thats the breakdown on whats on the smog report. Failed 15 and 25 mph.

Re: 1992 honda civic failed CA smog test
did you take the car in ice cold? looks like you barely failed and also were you low on gas ?
fill your tank up with 91
drive a 100 freeway miles
take the car to a smog place and test it right away
leave it running.
the more fuel you have in your tank the cooler it will be
the cooler fuel will help lower combustion chamber temperature which will bring down your nox
the hc thing well, what plugs did you use? gapped correctly ? any engine mods?
if your motor is stock or close to it and you paid for iridium plugs you ****ed your self right there.
get some basic ngks 2.49 a pop
and last the long drive will heat up your cat which works best when it is hot
and not as well when it is cold.

Re: 1992 honda civic failed CA smog test
On gas it was about half way, and could it be that the ignition timing is off? That was one of the theories I was told because when I drive around 20-25 mph some smoke comes out.
