Default ~deep thought~ on lightweight rims

i dont really understand this concept of putting light rims on cars (ive had rotas etc etc)

- so you buy 12 lb rotas or whatever weight they are
- but as soon as you drop the car back on the ground, that rim now becomes a 2200lb rim- no?

i dont get it, if you buy a light rim, its only light in your hand. but when mounted on a car , all that weight is on the rims.

has anyone else thought about this.....

thanks for everyone replying, i understand what everyone is saying. no further replys needed..LOL

thanks again

no
because thats wrong

the rim itself is still 12lbs,
it just has more pressure being applied to it.

the engine doesnt have to turn THE ENTIRE CAR, it just has to turn theWHEELS,
and that is where the weight savings come in to play.

its ROTATIONAL WEIGHT,
if there is less weight in the wheel, it will be easier for the engine to turn it,
therefor more of its power can make it to the ground, and get the car moving,
instead of being used to turn that 25lb BLING BLING 18"er

The lighter your car is (light weight wheels, parts, etc.) the less energy it takes to move it and stop it.

I try to think of it this way.

Just like a lightweight flyhwhel they will help you accelerate quicker because there is less rotational mass.

you should lighten your car by getting out of it and selling it ! . haha flame on

It's kind of similar to putting a smaller sprocket on a bike. With the original sprocket it takes more power to get it moving quickly. But if you had a sprocket with less teeth on it (smaller) then you could move the bike at the same speed as the big sprocket w/ less effort.. Or if you put all your effort into it, The bike would take off faster. Even if the weight of the bike stays the same. The smaller sprocket will get it moving quicker.

I know the smaller sprocket isn't much lighter at all, but thats not the point w/ the bike. The smaller sprocket requires less effort to get going faster.......Now to relate to the car, the lighter wheels take less effort to get moving faster.

1. say ur rims are light, say 5 pounds comparing 15" to say 18" . 5 lbs x 4 wheels = 20 pound weight savings

2. the main purpose of a lighweight wheel is to reduce the amount of energy needed to actually turn the wheel, rotational mass is what were looking at , the more rotaional mass the more energy its gonna take to rotate the wheel from a stand still , imagine 2 large discs pinned in the center, one made of steel and one made of styrofoam, you can easily see that it would be easier to get the lighter wheel moving from a stand still

Weight is weight. And wheels are unsprung weight, which should be kept to a minimum.Think about it: You have a 20lb wheel and a 10lb wheel, which do you want from a performance standpoint?
Obviously, the cars weight will be on whatever wheels are on there, but the lighter the wheels, the easier it is for our torqueless engines to turn them. Say you have a bicycle. No matter what wheels you put on it, your weight and the weight of the bike are still on top of them. Wheels that are very heavy would make it very hard for you to pedal the bike. Light wheels on the other hand, make it easier. It's the same with a car.

EDIT: Well, I thought I was going to be the first to respond.

i realize what everyone is saying. ive had steelies, rotas, velox's,ssr's. i dont really see that much of a difference between them other than slightly more wheel spin.

is there anyone with time slips that show an actual improvement in 1/4 times? going from a steelie to a rota?

Just go cover your steelies in lead tape...then roll them for a day or two....then switch back to the rotas. You'll feel the dif.

One last thought, I don't know if this is exact or not but I was told the every 7lbs is equal to a horsepower. So if you shaved 21 pounds off just your wheels that's another 3 horses! Not much, but every one counts!!

lighter wheels = better acceleration and faster braking. it's all about less rotational mass baby!

I'm pretty sure that the weight taken off of your wheels counts even more than that.

Just remember tires play a part in it too. I have some 12lb Rotas now VS the 18lbs steelies. I have 205/50 Azenis on the rotas and some All season185/60 Yok's on the stockers. The stock Wheel/Tire combo weighs less.
