[FAQ] D16Y7 / Y8 MINI-ME WRITE-UP.... WITH PICS (56k, maybe not)
#26
something odd happened today... i was going through 1st gear and got to about 5500 rpm and it was as thought the engine just stopped working, it almost sounded like a slow rev limiter, does anyone know what this could have been? (i also have a CEL showing, but i have not yet checked it)

the CEL appeared last night while doing another 1st gear pull... i hit about 6500rpm and the CEL came on, so i got off it. (it didnt stumble when that happened)
so yeah, i kinda thought it could have been a 'safe mode' type deal, but i suppose i'll check it out tomorrow... but it was kinda gut wrenching when it stumbled today.

Re: (soccaian)
Been there and done that (first time I put my WB02 in and watched it go full lean when you get off the gas was pretty scary!!). Just find out what the code is, reset it and see if it happens agian. Definatley gotta keep tabs on those CELs or you could potentially destroy that new mini me!

i was throwing 3 codes earlier, a 14, 22, and 91... but i managed to wire everything up properly which got rid of all my CEL's... however, i think since i went into high-cam territory, it may have been looking for a knock sensor which isnt there.

exactly like i stated earlier, you are throwing the same ones that i did, the iacv (14), knock sensor (23), and the fuel tank pressure sensor (91) rewire that iacv and clean out the screen, wire in a knock sensor, and as for 91 we need to find out cause as of yet there is no solution. because of code 14, your car has been suspended and has been put in "limp" mode. Good luck fixing it all.

i was just driving around today, and the car will not rev past 5500... it hits a rev limiter. i am about to go pull the code for that CEL and see what the hell is going on.
#34
i just checked the CEL... it's throwing a code 22, 23, 61, and 91....
22 = VTEC oil pressure switch
23 = knock sensor
61 = Primary O2 sensor
91 = fuel tank pressure (i dont care about this one.)
now, how do i go about fixing these codes?? i have already wired up the VTEC pressure sensor, perhaps i need to go back through the wiring and see if something has become disconnected.
also, why would i be throwing an O2 sensor code?

Re: (soccaian)
So what is the compression with your setup, and how do you figure it compares to a D16y8? I've been considering just buying a D16y8, but if I can easily swap new pistons and rods and get a better compression with my y7/y8 minime, Ill keep it and just swap the head, and get the transmission and ECU. from the Y8 as well.
#36
using the d-series compression calculator, it ends up at ~10.6:1 as compared to 9.4:1 for a stock y7, and 9.6:1 for a stock y8
we got everything taken apart, cleaned, assembled, and running in 7 hours... so yeah, it's not too hard.

Re: (soccaian)
Something to add:
The Y8 pistons have a smaller dish than the Y7 pistons everybody...Y7/Y8 minime is a better setup than a stock Y7 but you're still making less power than a Y8...make sure you remember that...
Y7 piston w/ 3.32mm dish:
Y8 piston w/ 2.12mm dish:

seems as if you wired the vtec pressure wire wrong in your discription, get a knock sensor to get rid of 23, you are in limp because of your 61 code, get a new o2 sensor, as for 91, there is no fix as of yet, if you wanna quick fix, get a 99 si fuel pump

i got rid of all the codes except for the 23
the ground for the vtec pressure sensor had come loose, so i fixed that and that CEL went away
the 61 just went away mysteriously
and the 91 doesnt throw a CEL on its own, but will come up when i pull any other codes... in fact, last time i pulled my codes, it didnt come up.. i only had a 23
to fix the 23, i'm thinking of wiring in a high-ohm resistor and grounding it to the chassis to see if that fixes it.

nope, its no longer in limp mode... it actually feels really strong... i just dont know whats goin on above 5500 rpm, i cant tell if the big cam is engaging or not, now do i know if the ECU will let it since there is no knock sensor

yeah... thanks a lot man!
haha... i'm just kiddin... now i just need to fix the timing, find a way to get around the KS CEL and adjust the valves

yeah, the car runs fine... it still throws a CEL, but otherwise, it runs perfect.
i'll eventually either buy a knock sensor or find a way to eliminate it... i tried wiring in a 100ohm resistor and grounding it out, but it didnt work

got a link to a page where someone tried this and it worked?
