**HELP** D15 and D16Y8 stock cam gears interchangeable???

**HELP** D15 and D16Y8 stock cam gears interchangeable???
Well my friend finally got his D16Y8 swap to idle steady (it's in a 95 DX coupe, engine converted to OBD1-spec), after changing the intake manifold gasket and plugging a few unused vac. ports on the Y8 manifold. Before that it was surging really bad, from 1K up to 2K rpm and back and forth. Now he said he got to idle around 1K rpm.
Problem is now he says the car lacks power, and it idles VERY loudly, even though it has a header and 5Zigen Fireball catback, he said it's louder than it should be.
He currently has the D15 cam gear on the car, and we used the marks on it to line everything up when installing the timing belt. We know the D15 and D16Y8 cam gears have the same number of teeth, but could it be possible that the keyway in the gear is in a slightly different spot on each gear, or perhaps the TDC marks are slightly different on each gear? If so this would make the cam timing somewhat off. Does anybody know if these 2 cam gears are compatible or if they are different?

off of his D15B7???
If so, most likely the timing is off. The Z6 and B7 share the same cam gear, which is a few degrees off from the D16Y8 counterpart

ahhh thank you, I will let him know ASAP.
I assume it's effectively the same as being off a tooth or two on the timing belt, correct? I guess by having the D15 gear on there, the valves weren't exactly set to TDC #1 when we were getting everything lined up, correct?

not quite being one tooth off, cause a tooth is about 7 degrees I believe. But on a stock engine, a couple degrees can be a big difference. I would suggest just looking into a AEM Tru Time for him in case he upgrades his valvetrain/cam later on

He will be putting the Y8 gear back on soon.
As for an adjustable gear, there's really not much done to the engine, and we really don't see much gains to be had from a SOHC adjustable gear, since you can't adjust intake and exhaust separately and all.
As for AEM Tru Time, I wouldn't touch those w/ a 10-ft. pole.
