Default $300 for a single cam vtec. should i buy it?

My 95 Dx is consumes oil like its gas and i need a new motor. Money is kinda hard right now cuz i'm a college student and jes got married. So i need a good motor ASAP. I found someone that is selling a motor out of a 96 Ex Civic with about 58,000 miles. How does $300 for jes the motor sound? Originally he was selling the motor and tranny for $500, but i told him all i needed was the motor. Should i go for it. Besides the compression of the motor, what are other things i should check before i purchase it if i choose to do so.

For $300? Hell if you don't want it, I do!!

BTW, spend the extra $200 and get it w/ the tranny.. belive me the difference between the DX and EX trannies is LARGE

I notice you're in Carson. Call up K Watanabe in Torrance. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a better price for that motor.

I worked at a dealership and usually local auto salvages charge rought around $800-$1100 for just a longblock. Usually we buy these motor for insurance flood cars.

So $300 is a great deal.

i say buy it and while you have it out do things like replace the clutch, get the flywheel lightened or buy a new one, and maybe if you want to get some heavy duty pistons and rods so you don't have to worry when it comes time to boost. turbopanda has a good set of rods and pistons rated to 1.2bar(around 17-18psi) and the set is only like $340 or something.

you're going to have to convert your car to OBD2, or the engine to OBD1. 1996 was the year the Civics changed to OBD2- you'll have to get a conversion harness. I would wait and find a D16z6, you should be able to find one for around that price. I would sell mine for 300 bucks, but I'm in WA state

How many miles on the D16? Not that it matters because 300 is a real good deal...

thats about how much they go for on average. thats usually the price i sell them at and i have no complaints, i guess it sounds pretty good, if you're still concerned then try to shop around a little more, but not too long or you'll miss out.

ob2-obd1 conversion isnt that hard...you'll have to cut n solder the wires of the fuel rail and mess with the distributor..but lik you said that money is tight so i would go for it...much cheaper than buying the converter..
