The oil life indicator is going to be far, far, far, far more accurate than pulling some millage out of a hat (3k,5k,8k,10k) because it takes a lot of different factors into account, not just how many rotations the tires made.
The thing is that guage is also calibrated to the oil that the manufacturer recommends. I personally would use the oil that Honda recommends, and when your computer says to change it, change it.
Unless you've tested your oil.

I think you'll find if you send the oil into Blackstone you'll be good for a lot more than 3,000k.
