Well my 05 civic decided it would be a good idea to occasionally misfire. The first time I noticed it I was driving it and it felt like someone just dumped the clutch (and no my foot wasn't on it lol) but I thought it was just bad gas so about a month later I go to crank it and it wants to stall out (rpms at about 500) and it's spitting white smoke so it was pretty crappy but I go drive it and about 20 mins later it starts to overheat quickly. Finally make it home and drive it around the next day and no problems at all. Now I first thought it was time to replace the head gasket but I'm only at about 80k miles so I need some help. Btw I just changed the spark plugs a few days ago and the old ones seemed relatively ok but I figured why not. And yes I did gap them properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

Losing any coolant? White smoke is usually an indicator of a head gasket leak.

Also, if the coolant is overflowing out of the reservoir next to the radiator, it's definitely a bad gasket.


About the intermittent misfire issue.. have you ever scanned for any codes? Checked for loose connections at the coil packs or elsewhere? Grounds are all tight and corrosion free?

 

I had some water around the reservoir but not an outrageous amount and I did scan for codes and this is the 3rd time it's said multiple misfires in cylinder 1 2 and 3 but the first time it was cylinder 1 3 and 4. And all the connections are good and the coil packs didn't look burnt or bad in any places. I wouldn't be surprised if it is a bad head gasket but the puzzling thing is that it isn't doing this all the time just randomly.

 

Hmm... next time it happens, record the freeze data. That will help to determine the cause of the misfire(s).

 

misfire issues will never cause you overheat, unless you are EXTREMELY lean.... Overheating, to me, says that you have a head gasket issue, or other cooling system failure. Low idle and performance issues tend to back up the head gasket theory.
