Default Engine Light (Code P0171)

Hey all. I just recently bought an 01 Civic LX. Just a few days ago the engine light came on. I found out that the code is "P0171". If anyone know what this may be for, it would be awesome. Thanks a lot.

System Too Lean (Bank 1)

What does that mean?Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.

Symptoms

You will more than likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a lack of power, detonation (spark knock), and/or a hesitation/surge on acceleration.

Causes

A code P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters (K&N, etc.) can cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled
There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.

Possible Solutions

Possible solutions include:

In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling

Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary

Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure

hmmm, when i took it to honda, they told me i needed a new fuel pump and thats why the light was coming on. could the fuel pump causethis light to come on? (the car does have a hard time starting at times). I guess ill try by changing the fuel filter. thanks a lot

sound's like something is clogged, try the fuel filter, then work yourself up.

honda will want you to change out the fuel pump for a reason, more money for them.

i think in our cars the fuel filter is a pain to change, i'm not sure on that one.

Copied directally from February 2005 Honda Service news
"Got DTC P0171? Check the
Short-Term Fuel Trim
NOTE: This article applies to ’03–04 Accords,
’01–04 Civics, ’02–04 CR-Vs, ’03–04 Elements,
’02–04 Odysseys, and ’03–04 Pilots.
Got a vehicle in your shop that purrs like a kitten
but it sets a DTC P0171 (fuel system too lean)?
Check the short-term fuel trim (ST FUEL TRIM
B1). If the value reads higher than 1.05, then
check the MAP SENSOR value with the engine
turned off and the ignition switch turned to
ON (II).
• If the MAP SENSOR and BARO SENSOR
values match, the MAP sensor is working OK.
Do the normal troubleshooting for DTC
P0171.
• If the MAP SENSOR and BARO SENSOR
values don’t match, install a known-good MAP
sensor, and retest. If the sensor values now
match, clear the DTC, and make sure the ST
FUEL TRIM B1 value is normal (it reads
about 1.0)."

clean your throttle body and idle air control valve first. if it struggles to turn over, the iacv is usually the cause.

Do you have any other codes besides P0171?
Check fuel pressure - if too high, check fuel pressure regulator and the fuel return line, if too low, check fuel pump, fuel line, fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator.
Check the primary O2 sensor in exhaust manifold in engine bay area.
Check for vacuum on EVAP canister purge valve on the canister side, if vacuum replace EVAP canister purge valve, if no vacuum, check valve clearances and if OK check injectors.
