DIY Key Programming
I am considering replacing my 2003 Civic's ignition key cylinder with a 2002 cylinder. This way, I can use the old-style, much more reliable, key-cylinder-tumbler system (that is non-sidewinder). Can the 2002 key head be re-programmed to my 2003's immobilizer using the steps at https://itstillruns.com/program-car-keys-6471878.html ?
The steps are as follows:
1.
Enter your vehicle with the key you want to program and insert the key into the ignition.
2
Turn the key to the "On" position and leave it there for 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
3.
Turn the key to the "Off" position within 45 seconds of finishing step 2, and then turn it back to the "On" position for another 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
4.
Turn the key "Off" again within 45 seconds, and then "On" again for another 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
5.
Turn the key "Off" and then back "On." The programming should be completed and the key ready to use.

Re: DIY Key Programming
Your immobilizer system is paired in the ECU, and the process of pairing them requires external programming devices. You'll need to have a Honda dealership pair any keys with the existing immobilizer system in the car. If you're referring to a key fob, you should be able to program a key fob yourself. But the keys themselves, you won't.

Just remove the tumblers that stick to fix the lock. while it'll be easier to turn the lock, you won't be able to disable the immobilizer without a programmed key.
