Check engine light Code P0420 Catalytic Converter
Hello all, new to the forum. Here to tell about a P0420 Catalytic converter code i diagnosed, however the issue was related to a cooling issue that triggered the P0420 code. For a while my engine was burning a lot of oil; about 1L/1000km. Could not figure the issue until i really started digging into it. At times the engine temp was burning quite high. I noticed the following symptoms
-Irregular high temperature gauge reading
-Low coolant levels
-Leaks around the thermostat and hose areas
-Leak around the water pump gasket housing
-Oil leaks around the valve gasket area / EGR valve gasket / and Cam shaft plug.
1. Cleaned the EGR valve, replaced the camshaft plug, replaced the valve cover gasket
2. Replaced the Thermostat noticing the seal was definitely in need of replacement
Came to the realization that because the thermostat needed replacement because the high engine temperature was burning oil at irregular high temperatures which in turn would be sending high temperature gases to the catalytic converter causing it to trigger the P0420 code. After replacing the thermostat and removing the air from the cooling system the check engine light stopped coming on. Coming to the conclusion that high engine temperature caused by a faulty thermostat can trigger a P0420 code. Hope this helps.

Probably has more to do with the oil consumption. Oil will burn in the cat making it extremely hot and can lead to melting the ceramic structure in the cat.
Also drastically shortens the life of the cat.
