1,2,3,4 misfire and random misfire, help!!
ok so heres the deal. i bought this 2002 civic ex with 170k on it for 800 bucks. motor needed all new intake valves cuase they were all bent!? lol anyways got the head done at a shop and put the head on. got everything hooked up and fired her up. its missing pretty bad. sounds like it is cammed out.. so i took it to a garage just to have them double check everything. they said its in time.. i had some fuel leaks, they fixed that but its still misfiring. if i drive it for a hour or so the codes come back on. what could this be? valve lash possibly? or is the motor just F*CKED.. if so im going to buy a whole new motor this weekend for 250 bucks and say screw the old motor. any help will be appreciated thanks

lol...surprised you bothered to get the head job rather than just swap in a cheap low milage engine...
anyways start by getting the freeze frame data from the obd2 scanner...that'll tell you a lot of info about the misfires...
also check out the sensor data while the car is running...what are the short and long term fuel trim numbers you're seeing?

same with my 1990 honda civic 1.6 head gasket blown replaced that checked the head, installed new plugs wires cap rotor, distributor, checked timing, now missfires constantly,no power gettin worse, could this be a bad torque sequence on the head. no loss of antifreeze.checked compression seems low,100,90,100,120 it ran better before i was burning antifreeze.bought to do it all over and have head checked again, please help me.

Re: 1,2,3,4 misfire and random misfire, help!!
hey i am pretty new here. so sorry if i miss something..
I am having the same problem (as the original poster) with a 2003 civic lx (4door). I am at about 178,000 miles on a 1.7 liter. motor.
I have an OBDII reader on loan from a friend, and i keep pulling that misfire for each individual cylinder as well as random/ multiple misfire.
after the original code pull I replaced the plugs and that solved the problem temporarily. I have been searching through this forum for a related topic and this is the best i could come up with...
I have never dealt with these individual ignition coils, and i have no knowledge of how to test on to see if its bad.
Am i right in assuming that this is going to be caused by the plugs, coil or timing chain?
can i test my coils?
I am going to run the test mentioned by theineffable, and see if anything comes up.
thanks in advance for any help.

thanks, I live in California and they are 48-86$ a piece depending on where i have looked, tag on our nearly 10% sales tax they can be 200$ to replace.
if i can get away with replacing only one or two it would be helpful.
if not i guess i will break down and replace them all.

you can get away replacin 1 or 2 for now just swap which ones are bad take 1 out swap new one in see if it runs better I dont no the ohms of resistance there supposed to be,but you can by a new 1 test the ohms on the new one compare the ohms to the old 1,need a ohm tester thoe there cheap i got one from autozone 10 dollars.you unplug the harness of 1 coil hook the points up test the resistance I bet thats you problem luckily you got that many miles from them.

If it runs better no symptoms, save you pennies and buy new ones.Make sure if you never replaced the timing belt it must be done soon.along with waterpump, all fluids meaning tranny, and other general maintence, keep it clean she will treat you good and give you plenty of miles.
