Default Photoshop Tutorial #2: Basic Colour Change

Step 1:

Click on the polygonal lasso tool and do an outline of the car. Like this. When you are done that right click on the selected area and copy via layer.

Step 2:
To actually change the colour click Enhance -> Adjust Colour -> Hue/Saturation

Step 3:
If applicable choose at the top combo box the main colour of the car you are changing. Since this one was Yellow I chose yellow. Then play with the scrolling bars underneath to get a colour that you like. It should look something like this.

Step 4:
To do a little tweaking on the colour change click Enhance -> Adjust Brightness/Contrast -> Brightness/Contrast and play with those settings.

Step 5:
Well there is no step 5 just look at your damn picture. This is what my 2 min job came out as. If you pay attention to the car outline more than I did you will get an alot cleaner outline colour change, which you can see on mine there are a few mistakes.

Ya, zooming in will help. Also, press ALT (-) or SHIFT (+) when trying to adjust the lasso.

the only colors it's saying i can adjust are "master, reds, greens, yellows, blue, cyan, magenta"

Which should i pick for changing the color of a black car as it's acting funny for me

No you dont. If you hold down on the lasso tool there will be options on there. The magnetic Lasso tool and Polygonal tool. Click the poly one and then click where you want to start, then move the mouse around the outline of the car until it cant be straight line anymore and click again and then keep following the lines. And do the whole car this way.

The color will come out better if you desaturate the section to be changed first.
Original:

Without Desaturation:

With Desaturation:

Another tip for the lasso tool is to use the polygon lasso, expand selection by 1px, and then feather by 1px.

To do a black can when you are in the colour changing tab where you move the scrollers to change the colour there is a little radio box on the left that says colourize. Click that and then increase the saturation and work it out from there.

i wouldnt recomend the lasso tool cause you can sometimes tell where the selection has been made, although you did a pretty good job. i would recomend the path tool b/c you can outline shapes perfectly. but when you make a selection of the car and you adjust the hue/saturation you adjust everything in that selection including the interior. i also use the mask tool. you can basically "paint" in the areas that you want to be selected which is good for complex selections

I choose to describe the tutorial in Lasoo tool because not all versions of PS have the Pen tool.
