I <3 building race cars...
Okay, some of you remember pics I posted months ago for the 2005 FSAE race car we designed & built, and now we are working hard on building the 2006 car... here are some recent progress pics...
frame progress:
Intake manifold progress:
you like the hand-made bellmouths?
there obviously is other stuff being built, but I will wait till more stuff comes together before I post anymore pics...
OH, BTW, for those curious about speed.... the '05 car ran 0-60 in 3.95 sec., this years car is projected to be 22lbs lighter, and make more power & torque

Re: (Tad)
here is the link to SAE's official page for the SAE Formula Series
http://students.sae.org/competitions/formulaseries/
most cars are "similar" due to highly restrictive rules, its very similar to formula 1 guidelines. As far as engine, rules limit size to 610cc w/ all air going through a 20mm restrictor (which results in the very small car size to keep the cars fast) Our team uses a Honda CBR F4i engine (599cc) that then has custom made high compression pistons (we use JE) (around 13:1) that are oversized, and increase the dislplacement to just under 610cc from there, our own intake and exhaust is designed to provide a long flat torque curve, we peak tq at about 8700 rpm. engine revs to 15000, though we usually set limiter to 13000, as we make 75% pk tq there.
there is a LOT more to the car than that, but it would take a long time to write about, short version, it would cost around $75k for joe shmo to have a company build this car for him, in direct parts, it costs us around $25k, not including labor, design time, donated parts, donated time, etc....

Its more like a class or college team deal. I am a MEM @ Drexel and our dept also has an FAE team. Last year our car pulled nearly 2 g's on the skidpad. Pretty impressive stuff i wish i was more involved earlier because now that im a senior its a lil too late to get involved...
Your car has cooler wheels than our SAE car too

haha, actually, all of the above kind-of.
I am a graduate student @ the university of cincinnat, working in the Structural Dynamics Research Laboratory, Im doing my thesis on part of the dynamics to this race car, and is directly related to my career. I get paid to build the car (in a round about way), so in that sense, its my job. I love doing it, its the career field I am going into, so in that sense, its my hobby. And FSAE is a student competition, so it is DEFINATELY a school thing, however, aside from the main competition amoung all the other universities (in may in detroit, and cali) we also race this car in the A-Mod class (SCCA) year around, and actually since a lot of other schools has started doing this SCCA has opened up our own FSAE class.
