For NYers...
How is the Maaco on northern blvd ?
I just got my first car in September and didn't know much about cars then. Im learning slowly. I have little dents and some of the paint is chipping. The guy who had it before me look like he sprayed over some spots also.
What exactly do you guys mean when you say prep it yourself ? What would I need ?
I have a 98 civic coupe btw.

Got it done in manassas. I paid 300, but i paid the painter 200 on the side to fix a quarter panel dent, remove rear wing and fill in the holes( he welded them, no bondo) Also had him remove all lights and primer before paint. They had my car for 5 days and can't say i was dissappointed, more shocked than anything. Alot of people didn't believe it was macco, but 3 years later it is starting to show macco lol.

Re: ____OFFICIAL MAACO paint job thread_____
I have a question for you guys about prepping, and also have advice for others about prepping.
my situation:
prepping an old lexus before taking it to them. used 2 part spray can epoxy primer (awesome by the way) to fix all the dents.
problem: ran out of the epoxy primer (ordered it online) and still have some imperfections on the plastic bumpers. I am scared to use spray can duplicolor primer from an auto store- will that primer hold up when they are painting it, or will it be prone to bubble and crack?
OR
should I just leave those areas unprimed (just fillered and sanded) and let them finish it?
another question:
Should I pay maaco to sand the car again, and spray primer sealer over the whole car before they paint it? Or should I have them paint right on top of the sanded paint, and epoxy primered areas?
advice for those without a paint gun/compressor (like me):
get this 2 part epoxy primer spray can- its great and waterproof- and VERY durable.

Re: ____OFFICIAL MAACO paint job thread_____
damn 500 bucks. I got a lot of dents tho so I'm sure the price would go up. I'm sure I could take off my fenders and try those myself. The only major problem would be driver door..there's like 12 tiny dings. The rest of the car only few tiny ones here and there.
Can Maaco get the exact same color of your car? Or would I have to buy the paint?

Re: ____OFFICIAL MAACO paint job thread_____
here is my moms old lexus that I prepped before taking it to maaco.
sanded with 220 grit all over- stripped home depot paint from bumpers (sucked), fixed all the dents (epoxy primer), had a body shop weld in a new part of the rear quarter panel.
alot was removed (chrome trim from bumpers and cladding), front grill, corner lights, tail lights (after we got to maaco I took them out), center liscence plate filler piece, trim around the windows, rear trunk emblem and lock (trunk held down with zip tie on the way to maaco..lol)
we got the supreme paint job, with surface prep for $660.
taken to one of the better maacos in the philly area.
will be painted black- ill post photos when we get it back.

What grit sandpaper should I sand my car down with before I bring it to them?also should I remove my headlights tailights and sidemarkers when I drop it off or do they do a good job masking it off?

Re: ____OFFICIAL MAACO paint job thread_____
Nope, they removed all the lights and covered my exhaust and everything to prevent overspray.
They have a lot of books with color codes. They can do any color you want. I painted my door jambs black and anywhere else the original purple was showing. And they wouldn't paint my car until i bought a new hood because i had alot of dents in it and the manager didn't want my car to look like **** with a dented up hood.

Re: ____OFFICIAL MAACO paint job thread_____
actually, thats what the shop uses is 320, and the paint isnt laid "thin" they put down sealer, then 2 coats of color, and 2 coats of clear just like everywhere else. if anything it would be to the discretion of the painter himself. if every little "thing" shows then you either used to aggressive sand paper, or you just didnt feather edge well enough.

Went to the Maaco at northern blvd in NY.
Dude told me $900 with the body work. Didnt tell me what package it was but it had a 2 yr warranty. I told em I'd think about it. Im going to the one on jamaica ave soon and see what they tell me.

the only thing worth having them do the bodywork is that they can be blamed if the dings show-
versus you doing it yourself- if stuff can still be seen that is your fault.

Re: ____OFFICIAL MAACO paint job thread_____
I was thinking to paint the color like the dark grey on the 04-08 TL's. The guy showed me a book and it looks like the charcoal color but I want to be sure. Should I just go with the color code ?
Another question is I just got my first car a while back so im just getting to know stuff about cars. What are some things to ask about the paint job to bargain with the guy ?
