Troubleshooting P0420 Catalyst efficiency
My check engine and maintenance light came on on my 2003 Honda Accord LX. I took it to Autozone and they said that it was either the catalytic converter(I just had it replaced about 6 months ago), engine misfire(changed spark plugs 2 weeks ago) or large vacuum leak or engine oil leakage into exhaust-valve guide seals, piston rings. My cars has 126,876 miles. I am a single female and can't afford to be taken for a ride by a repair shop. Any suggestion? Really need help because low on money.

renee, what kind of a warranty did they give you on the converter?
if you still fall under the "time frame" i suggest taking it back and seeing about getting a new one.
keep me updated 4sho

you only get a warranty if you have a shop install the aftermarket ones.
the after market ones really do suck.

Here at my dealer we see many people go down the same path as you. A Honda OEM cat = $$. I myself would not want to have to purchase one.
The problem with the aftermarket cats seem to be that Honnda ECM does not take a liking to it. We still see the same P0420 codes with a new aftermarket cat. If that is the only code an problem would you want to just drive with it until something comes up that would warrant it being fixed, like emissions?

A common problem with aftermarket cats is them being to small. I've had several Odys and V6 Accords that threw a p0420 after an aftermarket cat was installed and when we looked at the cat it was about 1/2 the size of the factory cat.
