2008 Honda Accord EX-L V6 Auto noise on cold starts (vid)
155k Miles. Makes this noise on cold starts. Goes away as soon as it warms up or if I drive it. Any ideas?

Also, it has been doing this for couple of years. After the first warm up it will be quite as normal ever start unless it sits like over night and has a true cold start. Someone suggested it could be the power steering pump or timing belt guide? But didn’t make since since it goes away? Thanks again

I’m leaning towards timing belt tensioner. Just didn’t think something like that would go away once warm

Hello,
We own a 2012 EX-L and we had the exact symptoms shown in the video. It was the timing belt tensioner and since the labor to do that is the same as you would have if you did the maintenance belt/tensioner/water pump, we had them do the all. A good local shop did it for $800 although it is possible to do yourself if you are driven to do so.

Took it to the dealer. It’s the tensioner as guessed. Is there a easy way to do to besides taking the whole front off like doing the belt etc. Was quoted $700 and it’s a $60 part

Yes, this is really about the labor... I have not done it on this model but if you are taking off the belt, you are a few steps from doing the water pump as well. BTW, dealers are expensive and since this is routine, a Honda specialist non-dealer option worked for us.

You have to take the front end of the engine off to access the part. You can find the whole water pump timing belt kit from ebay OEM everything. No point in replacing the tensioner only to have the belt break do it all while u are in there
