2005 Accord 4cyl bad milage
I have a 4cyl accord which I have synthetic oil at all oil changes since 10k miles. I get 26 mpg highway. I do 70 mph for 45 miles each way. I had an 1992 integra which got 27 mpg same trip and reved mich higher. It was rated 28 mpg highway and I sold it with 220k miles. Why is the accord so much worse? It is rated at 34 mpg highway. Honda say if the check engine light is not on there is nothing wrong.

Is the accord modified in any way, but my bro also only gets about 28mpg ... Try keeping your revs under 3k on every gear , try checking your oil maybe it's a little low

Re: 2005 Accord 4cyl bad milage
What was the best mileage you have gotten, has it dropped recently?
I have a 96 civic ex and always averaged like 25.6 mixed driving, mine is rated up to 32 hwy, I think it depends on how you drive.
I would do a basic tune up, cap rotor wires plugs, fuel filter and o2 sensor (primary)
See if that helps.

Re: 2005 Accord 4cyl bad milage
26 on the highway sounds about right, last I checked I was getting 28 give or take a mile. My 90 Accord gets better gas mileage than my 04. Both stock 4cyl, difference my '90 is a 5 speed manual and the '04 is an auto.

26 mpg on the highway is terrible. Not sure if they made any changes to the engine from 04 to 05, but my 04 with the 4cyld gets 32 to 35 on the highway, cruising 75 to 85 mph. About the worst I have ever gotten was all in town driving, in the winter where I would let it idle to warm up and I got about 26 to 27. Usually mixed driving I get 29 to 30, about 60% in town. Has over 182K on it now and still getting the same.

I have an '05 accord with 135k. Around town, I get 23/25. A couple of years ago, I had a job that was about 20 miles away. Almost all of which was highway. I was driving about 60 mph and was getting 400 miles out of a tank of gas. I then started driving at 55 mph and immediately started getting 500 miles out of a tank of gas... 25% increase - not too shabby
Without question, I po'd a lot of drivers doing 55 mph but it tells a tale... In my opinion, 55 mph is the sweet spot for this car.
If I do any long distance and wanted to experiment, I have reached 40 mph on prior trips.
I believe if you pull down from the 75 mph, you will notice a tremendous increase in the mpg you get

FinzWake,
When you quote 400 to 500 miles per tank, do you fill up as soon as your low fuel light comes on? Just curious as my light comes on with about 4 gallons of gas left in the car. Winter, in-town driving, the light usually comes on well before 400 miles. Summer, with a little more highway driving, I routinely drive another 80 to 100 miles after the light comes on, making a total of 500+ for the tank. Most of the time it will hold 15 to 16 gallons at the most, still leaving over a gallon in reserve, even after all that driving with the light on.
One trip was from Kansas to Colorado a few years back. I had to drive my Dad's RV due to a medical condition he had. My sister followed me in my car. My dad does not want his RV driving above 60, so we made a slow trip back at 60 mph. Needless to say, my Accord had never gone that slow on the interstates before. However, I did get over 600 miles on that tank and exceeded 37 mpg.
By the way, just to be clear, I have an app in my droid phone that I hand check every single tank, so I'm not just guessing what I get. I try to be consistent with how far I fill it up too as I know that can make a big difference. My wife's MDX will allow you to put another 1 to 2 gallons of fuel in after the pump clicks off the first time, which can make it widely differ on economy results. I had back to back tanks with it that went from 13 mpg to 29 mpg, based on where you stopped filling it.
I have had 2 Ford diesel superdutys and 1 Dodge Cummins truck that I never ever got close to the fuel mileage that many people claimed. I tried all kinds of things to get better, but not much helped, so I feel your pain.
With that said however, 26 mpg out of a 4 cyld Accord is way too low. Here are some of my last results, with exact calculations:
Almost all in town driving, lots of idle time to warm car up in am:
28.88
27.03
28.33
30.68
28.45
31.58
29.04
Last real highway trip to Nebraska and back, Aug 2011:
34.12 mpg
33.9 mpg
I still run the stock size tires, don't really check the air pressure that often, but usually let Discount Tire do it when I'm around there. Around Colorado I run the 85 octane fuel, not the expensive stuff. I use Mobile One oil, but only change it every 10,000 miles. I changed the plugs at 120K miles, but they still looked good. Change the air filter when I have to, meaning it is usually pretty bad before I swap it.

Re: 2005 Accord 4cyl bad milage
I can't say I wait for the light to come - I pretty much fill up at any point below half a tank when convenient... but as I think about it, I can't recall ever getting 14 gallons or more so I'd say that leaves 3 in the tank...?
I over-inflate the tires: Car calls for 32 psi... tires max at 44 psi. I beef mine up to about 36 or 38. I never have a lot of weight in the car and my first (original) set of tires had life left in them when I changed them at 70,000 miles
I have 134,500 miles on the car and have barely touched it: brakes (at 70k) and plugs at 105,000
Aside from that, just fluids and air filters
I always used mobile 1 (0W-30) and changed oil and filter at 5,000 - probably overkill but I don't mind tinkering and I figure it certainly does no harm.
I also run Lucas UCL in each tank and try to put Shell gas in all the time (I read once that their gas is superior) and just get Regular
Next oil change, I'm sending it out for testing - I'm curious to see what they come back with... for $25, if they give me a heads up on something, it's money well spend. I'd also like to know what kind of feedback they give me on remaining oil life, if any
Your in-town mileage is incredible! I'm usually in the 22 mpg neighborhood. In all fairness, I live in a very hilly area and I'm not the only driver so that doesn't help.
But still... 27-31+. Congrats!

Re: 2005 Accord 4cyl bad milage
3 biggest Factors that affect MPG in this order:
1. Speed - EPA ratings are around 55-60mph, at 75 you are killing your MPG. If you want to drive 75, pay the price, and quit yer bitchen.
2. Air Temp - You will see a 5-7 MPG difference depending on the outside air temperature, I get 25-26 in the winter, and 30-32 in the summer.
3. Vehicle maintenance - tire air pressure, air filter are the biggest two, unless you have something seriously wrong with the car.
At least these have been my experiences. I check my MPG EVERY tank at fill up. The only way to calculate is the number of miles divided by the number of gallons, no other method is reliable.

Try the "Parking spot tune up"! Turn your ignition key to on where the dash lights up, but do not start the engine. Put your foot to the floor on the gas pedal with the key in the above position for two minutes. After the the time elapses, turn the key to the off position. Proceed to start the car and drive it as you would. This teaches the ECU to learn how you drive. Better performance and a added bonus better gas mileage.

You should do a small claim court against Honda saying that their Honda Accord mpg is rated at 34 mpg but instead you only get 26 mpg. That is if only you know enough owners complaining. Just saying but it reminds me of this lady that did a small claims court and won. The story behind it was that Honda claimed that their Civic Hybrid can get 50 mpg but true story be told, the Hybrid vehicle never got close to it.

Re: 2005 Accord 4cyl bad milage
mileage ratings were at 55mpg... just drive 65 and you will save a little gas here and there... be slow to accelerate and hesitant to use your brakes except of course when necessary... coast, keep you tires at proper psi, etc.... it is ALL to do with your driving style
in my car i usually get 33 mpg but sometimes i can get 51... all to do with driving style and circumstances
