Default 06 accord 4 cyl vent smell

My 06 accord has this odd smell once you go from standard heating setup and the passenger changes their temp control to something different. There is this odd terrible smell.

I have read that evaporator can get moldy due to small amounts of condensation left on the body of the evaporator? Some have claimed that using a "evaporator cleaner" sprayed up the drain plug fixes this?

I have already tried replacing the cabin filter with no resolution.

How many have tried this and had good results?

Thanks a lot
Dean

Sprayed up the drain tube....haven't seen that.

When you changed the old cabin air filter what did it look like and what did the inside of the "case" look like?

Yes, there are cleaners. If you get one read how to use it and follow the directions. There is a writeup around here that shows how one type of cleaner is used - I think "partshero" has this in the 90-02 section in the FAQ.

Awesome, thanks a lot. That's a new one on me as well about spraying up the drain tube. Then again I have never been in a car with this issue either lol.

Car has 207K mi on it. I was told to try and remove the wiper cowl and vacuum out any debris that may be in there that leads to the fresh air intake of the HVAC system.

I didn't notice anything suspicious inside the cavity where the cabin filter was. I doubt it's the cabin filter itself. If it was I would think that the smell would be there all the time that the HVAC system fan is on. But the smell is only there when you change the controls into the Dual climate control setting (Driver side 80* and passenger 70* for example).

Do you get this in fresh and re-cir mode? If so, don't mess with the cowl.

Looking at the layout if the smell is there in both modes. I'd try the cleaner. Use the directions but it looks like - to me based upon the pic - that the best place to introduce the cleaner might be where the cabin filter is.
