trans / starting problem
Firstly, this is an awesome forum. You guys have really got everything happening!
Anyway, I've done a search but not come up with anything, so hoping someone might have an idea on this problem. My old dad (84 this year) has a 1990 Accord EXi with the 4 speed auto that is his pride and joy. Problem is it occasionally won't start and the 'S' light on the dash will flash. If you leave it, sometimes it will start again after a minute or 2. Othertimes it can take hours. It has happened twice before when he's been driving - the trans will start acting up and if he stops and tries to restart, it won't. Have given it to dealer - $1200 later after replacing the computer, it's still doing it!
BTW, I reckon that even though it's not in 'sport' mode, it's stuck in 'sport' mode as it really hangs on through the gear changes. When I've driven it I've pushed the button and it hasn't made any difference - except once the light started flashing and then wouldn't start ........etc etc.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

You can get the code the TCU is trying to tell you by jumpering the Service Connector; if it has never been used it might still be taped to the harness with BLUE tape;

The 'S' light should flash a code.
When you say 'won't start' please clarify: won't crank over the engine? or engine cranks over but won't start/idle.

My first thought was the starter interlock - if the "P" lamp isn't lit, the starter won't crank.
Flashing "S" lamp is the tranny's signal like a check-engine lamp. Read the code like Dude says. But I don't think tranny errors would prevent the engine from starting.
