Default overheating problem

this is for my brother's 96 accord . i changed out the thermostat and flushed and filled the coolant . no codes or leaks anywhere . afterwards, we drove the car to see if everything was ok . we drove the car for about 15 min. and nothing happened . the water temp gauge was normal . then when we parked the car in a nearby shopping center, the gauge went all the way up from normal to red and it started to smoke a bit . so we are still having overheating problems . does anyone have any suggestions ?

...are you sure you installed the thermostat properly?! Absolutely sure no leaks?
Check your fans, check everything out....

Sounds to me like the fans are probably not coming on..... could be the temp switch ( the one on the t-stat housing)

Did you buy the thermostat from the dealer, or a local auto parts? I had bought one from a local shop and they sold me the wrong temp thermostat. Replaced it with the dealer part, now it doesn't overheat anymore.......

the fans are working fine . i bought the thermostat from a local honda dealer and used it for about 2-3 months on my old motor . i used that to replace the other one my brother's car . i looked at his car again today and noticed that it was actually leaking this time . it wasnt leaking the other day . but today it was leaking alot of coolant under the car in one place . part #4 was the cause of the leak . it looks like it corroded and bubbled up and exploded . at first, i let the car warm up and didnt notice a leak at first . i squeezed the top and bottom radiator hoses to see if one was hot or cold to test to see if the thermostat was working . and as i squeezed the top radiator hose, i saw the coolant squirt out at that one hose . however, the top nor the bottom radiator hose was hot after warming up the car . do you think this is the only cause of the problem ? or could i still have a bad thermostat ?

I just thought of something.... Did you bleed the air out of the system, because it could be airlocked.

the problem is fixed . i guess with the leak there was no pressure in the system in order for the coolant to circulate . i replaced the hose with a temporary hose for now and it is working fine . thanks for everyone's input .
