how do you know when your timming belt is going bad
my car has been acting up lately i dont know whats the matter with it and when it idles it is very rough

Timing belt pretty much works good up until it breaks. Then your engine dies & probably bends some valves. Usually you don't get any warning. That's why it's scheduled for replacing every 90k miles or whatever.
Describe your problem more completely? Check for vacuum leaks? IACV & FITV are usually suspects if your idle is flaky. Sometimes air in your cooling system will confuse your IACV & FITV even if they're OK.

The way things go, they sould have an idiot light for the timing belt; cuz like everything else with an indicator lamp, they don't go on until you're screwed.
As mentioned earlier, when a belt breaks, it's like a light switch, one moment it's on; the next it's off.

IACV = idle-air control valve. Usually found on back of intake manifold, depending on what year/model you're talking about.
FITV = fast-idle thermo valve. Mounted underneath throttle body, but newer ('96+) cars don't have one.
If you've got a '79 Accord with carburator, you don't have either one of those things...
