Hitachi Dist. seal replacement help
Hello I am trying to replace the internal seal on the Hitachi dist. on my 1997 ex and I can't seem to find the c-clip that holds the pin on the camshaft key. I've tried pounding the pin out but its not budging. Is there any CD5 Ex's that have done the seal replacement that can help me?
Did you ever figure this out? The posts I saw also referenced C clip and washers, but the Hitachi distributor on my 99 Accord looks like your picture. I ended up pounding it out part way with a simple counter sinker, then a steel screw that fit in the hole. There's nothing else holding it on - then the shaft just slips out. Nicked the key somewhat, and also ended up nicking the pin hole in the shaft - did not come out easily - but got it all back together ok. The seal I found in this article didn't fit so well - seemed too big. https://honda-tech.com/forums/showth...stributor+seal
I don't think that pin is simply press fit in. I gave it a pretty good whacking with a hammer and punch and it felt like there was metal resting on metal in there. Almost as if the pin has a ledge inside and you have to push the cam fitting onto the shaft a bit to clear the ledge. (But I couldn't budge the cam fitting either).
It is possible that the pin has sprung barbs in it, in which case the pin will never come out this is a single-use distributor. I find that a bit hard to believe they would design it that way.
Has anyone tried drilling out the pin or cutting off the cam fitting to see what's in there?
Again just to be clear, this is the Hitachi distributor, used on the VTEC enginers, not the regular one that has a circlip holding the pin in or in which you replace the shaft seal from the inside.

over time I'm sure that thing just binds in there. You just need a punch. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punch_%28tool%29

I destroyed my punch (flattened the end) when I tried to take this out. I'll try again this weekend, from both ends, if you think that's really the case, and I will post pics. If you say the pin is tapered, I should be able to measure the different in pin hole diameter with my caliper, right?
Thanks. John
