Default Exhaust smells like burning plastic

About a couple weeks after I got my new muffler, like stated above, when I turn off the car and get out, the exhaust smells like burning plastic. I've checked and made sure that the muffler/piping is not rubbing/melting the rear bumper. I can't think of what else I can do to keep it from smelling so bad. Is there anything else I should check?

PS. No CELs or exhaust leaks.

It also might depend on the quality of the muffler. Cheap mufflers have packing that corrodes and burns away quickly, or the installers were idiots and left some wrap on it or something...

Just check the entire length of the exhaust for anything caught

nothings caught. There was no wrapping on the muffler. Unfortunetly it was a pretty cheap muffler, but thats all I could afford. I don't want to give the brand name, cause I know I'll get flamed. But is there anything other than getting a new muffler, that will help?

all new mufflers have a break in period where all the material used to make the muffler (chemicals and welding leftovers) are burned off. All the new acuras that come off the truck for PDI have that same smell when u first start em up and for a few days afterward

I don't know that it is a sign that people shouldn't buy it as I know when it comes to dirtbikes Yoshimura's are some of the best mufflers for them and when you first put them on they smell while getting broken in. I am guessing it is normal for your car to smell like that while breaking in the new muffler also. I don't really remember if mine smelled or not.

it's been about 2.5 months since its been installed, and it seems like it has just gotten bad recently. The first month it didn't smell at all.

Dude youre being an ***...he said he couldnt afford to replace the entire system right now. You putting that in your sig is just wrong.

I hope one day youre so poor you cant even have a car and then you'll realize youd LOVE to have something to tack a Ractive muffler on to.

He's not being an idiot, he has financial constraints.

I recommend taking that out of your signature because youre misrepresenting him.

Thanks for the help guys. It's not in his sig, just a quote. Yeah your right, i'm needing to save up for college. I'm a high school student who is also taking 20 credits at the community college, participating in varsity sports, and working 30-40 hours a week.

are u sure its the plastic u smell? or maybe its oil blow by thats coming out of your downpipe? I had the same problem before....just started to smell one day like burned plastic, i thought the inner liner of my hood was touching the hot engine, that wasn't the case...turns out I had a leak through my valves...could be a start of an expensive problem.
