engine question
my girlsfriends dad ( a ford mechanic) told me that if i frequently brought my 94 accord lx to about 6000 rpm, that i would blow my engine in no time. i was just wondering if he was right or if it would be ok to do bring the rpms that high. any feedback would be appreciated.
no
however if you take it to redline and leave it there for a long time, then yes, you will cause damage. in addition, dont rev that high when the car isnt at normal operating temperature. the red line is there for a reason -it indicates the limits of safe, continual operation of the vehicle
he probably told you this because he doesnt want you redling the car with his daughter in it, driving all fast and such

Well, if you drive 24/7 bringing the rpms to 6k... ...you may blow a gasket or something, I agree with the guy.... ...it could happen any time, even with a Honda... so... why don't you try to drive a little more descently and give a second chance to your car outlast its expectations of life.... ....you may be pushing the engine to its limits... and then.... it will end up at a junkyard or your pocket will have some side effects of your 6k rpm habits....
Take good care of your Honda, it is a danm good car!

Grow up please. The only time you should get the rpms that high is merging into high speed traffic or passing another car. Don't do that just for the sake of doing it. Your car will last longer.

give him a brake (yes...pun intended).
im not advocating street racing (as a search of my previos 5000 some odd posts would tell quiet the opposite), but to tell the kid never to rev the car out on a spirited drive through the countryside is ridiculous....
its all about moderation. don't push the car everytime you get into it...dont hop the front wheels at ever red light. but thats not to say that you cant allow the car to make its peak power now and then (though that doesnt mean speeding)

he says the engine will blow if i go that high because as things get old then they wear down. my car does have 150k miles on it. and i rarely speed. i just like to get up to the speed limit fast.
I know you have heard this before, but I will repeat it just in case you forgot. You are an A-hole. Will you be a smart *** all your life, or is it just a part time thing? Was I talking to you? no.

you have a real bone to pick dont you. if you dont like the message board system, then GTFO.
and how dare you call me an *******. all you have done since you have joined is argue and bitch and moan. i see from some of the stuff you post that you seem to have lots of experience with working on the nitty gritty of cars, things that people like me are only learning about.
instead of coming on as a pompous *******, why dont you put your knowledge to some good use, and try to help people out on a technical level. for all you know, this kid wants to take his accord out to a local track for fun. he has a shared interest in cars with his girlfriend's father, and thusly asks him for advice while at the track. the father, not knowing much about hondas, tells him not to rev it too high, and he wants to know if its true and why
though thats probably not the case, neither you nor i know. so instead of preaching to him and telling him to grow up, simply state the TECHNICAL reasons why redline and over revving can be dangerous. this is Honda-TECH...not Honda-Old man comes on and starts to preach to everyone without just cause.

well if hes a ford mechanic, then obviously he knows alot about fords but who knows how much he knows about honda engines, ive seen alot of other cars tachs and they redline alot lower than my accord.. is yours a stick or an automatic, because in automatic when your in final gear 6000 is really going quite fast, unless your track racing, which you dont even keep it there long, its not bad to bring it up there from time to time, but holding it there can be a real no no. i only go as high as 5500, but then again ive never done it on track, cause its stock and all and i really dont care... but im not gonna tell you not to do it man cause your hondas still got a lot of life in it and your not gonna mess that up goin to 6k frequently, just dont hold it there, happy driving.
its an auto and it is supposed to redline at 6500 i think. and no i dont race it. i rarely break the speed limit and most of the time when i do it i dont mean to. so dont get on my case about racing cause you dont even know me
