dreaded p0420 cel code questions, please advise
hey all, just got the light this morning, took to auto zone for the code and checked the haynesmcataktst system efficiency below threshold, and started reading about it and how common it is.
and the 600 or so tag from the dealer for the cat,is alot,i read about replacing the sensors on the front and back, which i'll probably try first. but i have no performance problems on the car or mpg changes.
so is this a urgent thing to fix?,one guy said he's drove around for 30,000 miles with the code, would like to back burner this til after the holidays.
any help would be appreciated

thanks hondadude, always quick with a response!,looks like a cool product to cover it up for emissions tests.cant beat the price.
but here in ohio i dont have to worry with that emissions test stuff, luckily.
i was more curious about long term damage,if any of not fixing either or. putting off fixing it til later.
guy at autozone said i might notice a sputter with rapid acceleration,i dont have nothing like that though.

99 Accord LX, 4cyl, 125,000 miles
I have had the same problem off and on now for about 40,000 miles or so. Over this time I have not had a drop in gas mileage or performance. I clear the code by pulling fuse 13 in the R/H fuse panel or sometimes it will reset on it's own. (The bulb did not burn out, I checked. )
I wish I could find a pattern of what type of gas or driving cycle causes the error, but it seems to be pretty random. The whole problem sucks because who knows if a new CAT or sensors will actually fix the problem. I have a feeling the system is overly sensitive.

Oh, there will be no long term damage from running with the CEL on, no damage at all.
I have a friend up in Nebraska that claims he 'cooks' the cats in a self cleaning oven, on the Clean cycle and then blows them out with compressed air and they are good to go again.
