Default Do I need a new transmission?

I own a 96 Accord standard 4-cyl. When I try moving between the 3rd & 4th gears, it is hard to shift. I have to use all the strength in my arm to shift it into 4th gear. But 1st, 2nd & 5th gear have no problem. I took it to a mechanic yesterday and he said that it is an internal problem and that I need a complete new transmission. I know it's hard to say what exactly I need to get fixed without seeing a picture or driving it, but would anyone happen to have experienced this before w/ a standard? I just don't want to shell out a thousand bucks for a new transmission unless I truly need one. I don't have that kind of money to just through around. I welcome any advice on this topic.

Could be the linkage possibly? I was having similar problems but only 1st & 2nd were bitches to get into gear. Got new cables and solved the problem. Look into this since your transmission isn't grinding, the damn linkage could be your culprit. Hope this helps! Good luck!

if i were you, i'd find the arms that the cables attach to and move them into each gear, and see if it's just as hard (you may need to unbolt the cables in order to find out 100%)...if it is, then the problem is inside the tranny...if not, then it's the cables....good luck...

oh yea, you can also find used transmissions on ebay and honda-tech for a lot less than $1000...you can probably find an f22 transmission in great shape for no more than $250...
