Coolant for '93 Accord SE
I think I need to add some coolant. I don't see any in the overflow and I had my temp gauge shoot up quickly and briefly while stopped at a traffic light last night.
Didn't happen again after that and electric cooling fan seems to come on when needed. I have some Prestone antifreeze which states it is safe to mix w/ any other color antifreeze. Honda manual is telling me never to mix different kinds. Also telling me I need special Honda recommended stuff due to aluminum parts in the engine. Is this prestone stuff OK? Also can I mix 50/50 w/ tap water or do I need distilled?

overflow tank on a an accord is in the front just behind the rad on the left side (assuming you are standing in front of car facing engine.
NEVER mix anti freeze of different types
green goes with green and orange goes with orange.

You can mix the Prestone yellow with any other and it is safe for Honda engines. You may have a more serious problem though unless you see your coolant level was seriously low. I'm suspecting a failing thermostat.

Thanks. I think you may be right about the thermostat but coolant was seriously low, like none (in the overflow that is). Might as well start with the fluid first.

if it went too low, u MAY have introduce air in the system...
just keep an eye @ the temps after the top-off; then think about burping the system via an air bleed bolt by the t-stat...

Re: (ricebike)
don't mix brand because the formula is different.
the preston/peak brand coolant is compatible for oem honda juicy.
you might as well do a flush now since you are putting in that much coolant already. just get a jerry can of those prestone, mix it with 50 percent DISTILLED water and do a flush and bleed
