I think, unless i am mistaken that you are talking about the shift solenoid. You have not stated the year of your car, so the procedure to test may not be accurate.

If the solenoid is open, shorted or out of specifications, it needs to be replaced.

1. Use a DVOM to test the solenoid’s resistance. Measure terminal A and ground. Measure terminal be and ground. Should be around 14-16 ohms. if not, replace.

2. connect terminal 1 to postitive battery post. connect terminal 2 to postitive battery post. You should hear a clicking sound each time you make the connection. If not, then you may have a problem in the circuit.

3. check then for continuity from the A/T unit and ground. If there is continuity, replace solenoid.

I suggest getting a manual to check this out further because it is pretty difficult to explain a testing procedure without pictures.

Good luck

i don't even know what a selenoid is. i don't know what it looks like. i checked the hayens manual but i didn't see it. maybe i am looking in the wrong place.
i have a 90 accord ex. automatic transmision. when the S light comes on i noticed that my automatic transimision shifts from 1st gear to the 3rd gear. i have to turn off the car and then turn it on so the automatic trans can shift from 1st gear to the 2nd one then to the 3rd one.
