My bad, I thought the drain and fill were both on the tranny. Is it different for an auto?

there is, its on the passenger side and has a slot to fit a 3/8 drive ratchet into to loosen it.

I always hear mechanics that say that if a transmission is going, if you put in fresh tranny fluid, it goes faster than with the old one in it. With that said, the drain and refill might be the way to go. The drain and refill is what the service manual from honda recommends.

There is a drain plug on the lower part of the trans that has a 3/8" square hole in it.
Remove that plug with a 3/8" drive ratchet, clean off the second gear clutch pak material from the magnet attached to the drain plug. Reinstall the drain plug then put in 3 qts of genuine honda trans fluid.
No doubt some simpleton will now jump in and SHOUT the 'book' calls for 2.8 qts of trans fluid, but I've been doing this for over 22 years and have NEVER seen a honda trans hurt by having .2 qts extra fluid in it.
Question: My Husband did remove, drain, reinstall drain plug and added 3 qts of honda trans fluid; don't think he cleaned magnet on drain plug; he drove and it started to shake; now won't go into gear; check engine light is now on; was working fine before hand. How can changing fluid make us lose transmission? Or do you think if we repeat a few more times it will help?

When changing transmission fluid you are supposed to fill run and then drain several times. Do you use clean transmission fluid each time/

Is this a question?

Yes you want to use clean fluid each time. Why would you put dirty/used fluid in there to flush out the old fluid? The point of doing it is to free up any fluid/gunk that may have not come out the first time around.

i recommend automatic trans fluid drain nd refills to my customers with hondas every 15,000 because thats what i was told by acouple honda techs. also DONT use ANYTHING BUT GENUINE HONDA TRANS FLUID!!! even if it says its ok for use in hondas, dont use it unless its from honda. u will burn out the trans.

I have a 99 civic ex. I changed the transmission fluid recently but after a few days it wanted to stay in the lower gear longer than it did before. After a week of this I changed the fluid again thinking I had not followed the instuctions correctly. Same results. It shifted perfectly for about 4 days then started hanging longer in each gear before changing.

Anyone have any suggestions for my issue?

Thanks

Non-issue, can always refill through the dipstick if that happens.
"as it did to me"
Since then ive just funneled fluid through the dipstick pipe. no issues.

not true, on a manual transmission there is no dipstick so it is an issue.

Oh yeah? And you drive a 90-02 4cyl Honda Accord? With a manual transmission?

The automatic variant has a dipstick. The stock manual transmissions do not. You made a mistake. rofl.

And i hope you are using Oem Honda Fluid on the 99-02 accord auto tranny, I had a 99 that i got with a bad trans. and they said they put in a used transmission when i got it and filled it with orilleys fluid it wouldnt go down the block with out slipping hardcore so i put dw-1 Honda fluid in 6 drain and refills 3 qts at a time and got 20,000 miles out of the broken trans. lol could have gone more but it got totaled And when you stop at a light it would bang down into gear lol But that Honda dw-1 fluid kept it strong and it seems like it needs a better trans. cooler because when the a/c fans were on it ran a whole lot better
