i just got a 91 accord always been a civic man but i got the car for free except i had to replace pass. side axle and lower ball joint question being it has sport shift in the tranny ........... and the light wont go off..... if undo hte battery it will reset it but iwanna know why plus when it is on it wont shift pass second...anyone ever had this problem and how could i fix it thanks alot

It is your TCU. I have a 90 Accord, I swapped out TCU with an LX TCU and it works fine! The sport shift is just a more aggressive shift, shift is 6200RPM's, without sport shift, shift point is I believe 5700RPM's...

Swap out your TCU and your problem's will be solved. This I can pretty much promise you! You can look for one on eBay, or I can sell you the one that I have, however, I am not sure if it works... I can sell it to you, if it doesn't work I will give you your money back. You can find a brand new one for $400. Or you can make me an offer for the one that I carry, and I can sell you that... and guarantee money return. transmission control unit. Just because the light is on doesn't always mean that it's no good. More than likely you have a fixable component problem.

Does your D4 light (on the dash) stay lit even when it's not in drive? If so, you probably have a tcu problem. If not, it is most likely something else.

no the all the shift light work fine..... how can i pull code on it?by the way thanks all for being so helpful i had questions on my 89 civic and no one could help me so thanks

I had the same exact problem with mine when I bought it. Dad thought the transmission was hosed. It was the TCU the whole time.

Now my transmission is delayed going into D or R but it's not that bad. Dad again thinks the transmission is gonna soon be hosed, but he said it's not shifting right either, which is BS, 'cause it shifts as good as it did when I bought it... I'm gonna have a friend take a look at it.

Let me add a little advice about code pulling on these early OBD and OBD 1 cars. Go to your nearest Honda dealer and have them get you a SCS connector. Plugs into the 2 pin connector to pull codes, Set timing correctly, and reduce the risk of ECU failure.

The connector is under the dash and sometimes a pain to get to! If that clip grounds anywhere, Bye-Bye ECU.

Sorry BLKFLSH, I have read your responses and have found you to be very knowledgable. But if you don't work on a ton of these guys every day you won't see it. I have seen it more than a few times and believe me, A 15$ SCS tool is alot cheaper than a 500$ ECU!

I work on them every day too and have never had a problem using the SCS connector or a paperclip. As long as you don't intentionally do something stupid there will be no problem.

Thats the problem, MooGoCow3! No one does it intentionally! Not every one is that smart at fixing cars. I have worked on Honda cars for 30 years and never used a paper clip to remove a code, But I have seen enough of them in there causing a ECU failure. You use the right tool for the job.(Including using scanners along with the SCS tool. (Adjusting early OBD2 Honda model idle speeds). Being a Honda professional, It just seems the right thing to do. It makes my job easier when people don't screw with it.

Consumers are known as the DIY'r. Since AutoZone had stopped doing it for free in California, they can save up to $80 an hour by retrieving the code on their own. The risk they take is up to them. The technician has to expect to solve problems that consumer make.

Most sensor are somewhat protected internally inside the ECU with resistors. They are pretty difficult to inflict damages to the ECU by fooling with them, other than sending battery voltage into them.

It would be nice to list the things we can do that can cause damages to the ECU.

ok guys calm down please today i drove the car and on the way home the s light came on and stayed on and the check engine light ..... now i papercliped the plug and the check engine light flashed code 43 so help me out please

DTC#43 Fuel system problem. More than likely your O2 Sensor is failing. Good points from all. I do alot of indepth work with ECUs and PCMs which makes me a little sensitive to things.

Also, I'd like to see someone reset a 95 Odyssey (Just an example) SRS light at the MES connector with a paper clip!

Does any light blink, with paperclip inserted? Just a difference of opinion blueshark. It's all good.

PS: You may have tcu issues. If you could take the cover off the tcu, and check for leaking capacitors, it could give you a definite answer. Good luck
