Icon6 1990 Honda Accord LX from the dead

I have recently purchased a 90 accord LX 2.2l. It has been sitting for over 12 years and I got a real good deal on it. I am attempting to get this vehicle back on the road. This thread is for any info about the car that might be available that I am not aware of and also any suggestions for a awesome build. But if I run into any technical issues I would like some help. I am new to Honda-tech, the last forum I used with thelincolnforum.net due to my 65 Lincoln continental hardtop that I sold.

Advice: Replace the usual fluids, oil change etc. Check the tires too (inflation and wear/ tear), air filter, battery (probably need a new one).

Overall those cars go like stink and will last forever if you keep good car of them. I've seen a few accords in the 800,000 - 900,000 kilometre range. Any startup issues, feel free to reply. I own a 91 LX and have a habit of working on her so I may have some help.

Good Luck though, post some pics.

well the Honda does not do anything no battery at all in vehicle when purchased. after the new battery I tried to start vehicle and nothing. Tested the starting system and found no signal at the signal wire for starter, after hours of back tracing the wire I found two three bad grounds. One no ground strap at battery terminal. bad ground under fuse box under hood and a bad ground under fuse box at driver kick panel. After these grounds were repaired I was able to detect bad ignition switch. Switch is on order.

Got new ignition switch and vehicle turns over but no start. I have signal at both my Idle Air Control valve and injector pulse at my fuel injectors. Removed fuel line to fuel filter and no gas. Tested main relay for FI and it is good. Ordering new fuel pump.

That's a long time for a vehicle to sit. Hopefully it was at least on a covered area, or somewhere with no grass. Grass would grow up and morning dew moisture would make contact with the undercarriage of the vehicle. I'd remove the drain bolt on the fuel tank and at least run some gas/cleaner through it. Your entire fuel line system will probably need replacing. Make sure to dry fire the engine first to get oil around the pistons. Remove ecu fuse and crank. Replace fuel filter too. Hit up the junkyard for trim and random pieces. Sometimes you'll find a car with recently replaced parts that are still good.

There are factory repair manuals online. Good luck, hope it fires up soon.

amazingly the vehicle was sat under a tree and on dirt. But the owner did keep it somewhat clean of leaves piling up over the vehicle and no undercarriage damage. I am planning on dropping the tank cleaning it out as best as possible I know there is scale and trash because I removed the sending unit and smelled the bad stale gas and seen the scale and rust. No hum from the alleged faulty fuel pump & I shot air through the fuel lines and I was unable to detect any clogs. So far looking at the car overall the worst damage was done to the interior due to one window not going all the way up and having plastic bag stuck in window.

O.K. everybody I have installed the new fuel pump. Removed about 4-5lbs of pure rust, scale and just nasty from inside the tank. Like I stated in an earlier post I did blow through and ensured myself that the fuel lines were clear. after installing new fuel pump I had fuel at filter and at fuel rail but no start. Found fuel injectors to be clogged. I cleaned fuel injectors as best I could with Carb/Choke Cleaner. I know this is not the proper way but it worked for 3 out of 4. I installed one refurbished injector. vehicle runs I'm happy. Now I plan on sealing up the engine with usual repairs for Hondas. valve cover gasket. new plugs and wires, distributor o ring, heater hose below distributor, AND OH YEA, there were two coolant temp sensors that I broke due them being super brittle after sitting for so long. But oh well. finish the seals flush the fluids, and on to the interior.

Right on..she lives! Hahah. Did you run it for a bit? This one guy I bought parts off once told me that he took his injectors to a diesel mechanic shop and they cleaned/tested the injectors for a fair price.

Another thing you definitely want to check is the timing belt, water pump and the seals that surround that area. If they need replacing, get OEM Honda seals as they fit the best. At the back of the block there is a water pipe that runs from the water pump to the thermostat. Over time the ends corrode. Spake plug tube seals always go out on accords. You'll notice when there is oil near the top or bottom, or both on the plug wire boot. Two sets, on on the underside of the valve cover and one on the rocker arm. For sure change the atf/mtf fluid with Honda transmission fluid too. If it's really nasty you'll want to drain, refill and go through each gear, then repeat the process a few times to get all the crap out.

A valve adjustment wouldn't hurt either. Curious to see some pictures.

I'm kicking myself in the butt as of right now for not taking pictures from when I first got it and it was covered in that green algae crap. But I washed her and sprayed down the door panels with bleach. Still got a long way to go.

Looks good! Nice job troubleshooting and getting it to run. Would definitely replace 12 year old weathered tires and the timing belt at this point.

These use an R12 system if I'm not mistaken unless the car has been converted to R134. Unless somehow your local laws are different, you will need to take it to a certified mechanic who is authorized to purchase R12 so that you can have the system charged.

Well while running i noticed a noise from the engine sounded like a tapping. I turned off the engine and checked oil level nothing on the dipstick. found massive leak at oil drain plug have one on order for tomorrow. Got the seats removed and down to the car wash/detail lady that works down from my job she has been pressure washing and shampooing and letting the chairs sit in the sun. I have all the door panels removed torn down and waiting on primer. all I have left to do on the interior is remove carpet and found out a way to fix the dash cover so I can mount my radio. I will be posting pics of thus far.

Pictures are looking good. What are your plans with her once she is road ready? Are you going to hang on to her or sell her, or?

Keep up the work, love seeing these pictures!

I have not made a final decision on whether or not I am keeping the Honda. I was looking for a 4 cylinder stick shift vehicle and got lucky and found this one in my neighborhood. I got a GOOD deal on it but it is 26 years old and still has quite a few original parts. To me because I'm a tire salesman and not a mechanic I enjoy the BUILD, the tinkering and customization. When I'm done more than likely I will lose my infatuation and sell it. But I at least plan on driving it and who knows after that.

So last night got home with new drain plug, I was worried because the old drain plug had mushroomed threads. looking inside of the oil pan the threads seemed to be ok(slightly squished), I did not remove any metal strings or strands from the old oil drain plug, and it was not an oversized drain plug but a different size head 13mm instead of the old Honda 17mm. At first it was resistant but after two turns it took and secured down TIGHT w/ a new gasket seal. Was able to run vehicle for over an hour at idle fans cycled no check engine light. SEEMS SOUND. Next on the plate is to remove interior carpet, clean interior, finish door panels, and remove valve cover and timing cover to inspect condition of timing belt. And decide if this is going to be something I am going to take on. I will be posting pics of my progress this weekend and all. Thank you everybody who has been checking out my thread. I've always wanted to do something like this online and be able to post a lot of pics like I would like to see. Sorry I did not take many pics of the beginning before I cleaned it.

Based on the pic's of the caps on the AC ports, it looks to be a 134 system.

These are some pics of the work I done this weekend. I painted my door panels where the vinyl used to be. during this process I blew a line on my air compressor and had to repair it in between coats. also after spraying primer on plastic portions I went over it with 80 grit after I sprayed primer it was still scratchy so I went over it with 320 grit and sprayed color. probably should have waited longer and sprayed primer again before I sprayed the base color. also I did do a base coat clear coat. the tape I used sucked so there was overspray spots. looking inside of the timing cover I am pleased with the condition of the timing belt and water pump. I am going to leave these as is and roll the dice for a while before I replace these components oil leak oil pan gasket. exhaust system is rusted out and tires are beyond dry rot crack I can see the air in the tires through the cracks. LOL so these money items are ahead of me and I am going to reuse the carpet it cleaned up pretty decent. and I'm not trying to win a beauty pageant.
