So... Im looking at moving to the Bay Area. How long could I get away with leaving my Civic registered in Michigan so I dont have the get it smogged/carb'd (whatever its called)?

 

My friends husband got away with it for years until he became a cali resident. For the longest he just used his Virginia drivers license and his car was still registered in Va. The only problem was when the car was due for inspection in Va he had to find someone to do that for him without his car being there.

We dont have any inspections in Michigan :D

Though if I move out there I will probably sell the hatch first.

as long as you keep your other state DL... but keep in mind that you may still get ****ed with. by operating on public roads in the state of California, you are technically breaking state law regardless of weather or not your car is legal elsewhere. if the cop is having a bad day, or if you are being an all around homo or driving like a jackass, you might have trouble.

also, if you have one addy on your DL, one addy on the registration, and another yet on your insurance card... chances are higher that the cops won't buy your "I'm just visiting" story

FWIW I'm still registered in OR (outside of a smog test county) and licensed in OR (addy is in Portland, where smog is required) insurance is listed as CA (I'd rather take my chances with cops than with thieves/shitty drivers/Mother Nature)
