it's easier to go to your local LBS, get a box and mail your bike to wherever you're going. you can also get insurance on it that way incase it's damaged during shipping, which isn't an option on a plane.

i took a trip from indiana to los angeles back in February via NW airlines. i went to the LBS and they had a road bike box for a 58cm bike(i ride a 56cm) i was lucky cause they left all the tubing and fork stays in the box. i broke it down.. zip tied and padded abuncha ****. it cost 80.00 each way. LAX wasnt to nice to the box and there were puncher holes on each side but i didnt have any damage aside from some scratches but that was my own fault for not bubble wrapping my axles and they touched the frame. sorry for writing a book
imho it would be better to simply ship your bike (after finding a box) to a reputable LBS in the area or someone you know at the location, then trying to take it on a plane.
with security stuff nowadays, they WILL open your bike box for airlines and they will most likely NOT put things back like they found it. on xxfixed there are always horror stories of broken stays and tubes because of rough baggage handlers.
i bet for around 80$ you could ship your track bike nearly coast to coast if you wanted

i got my free bicycle today from my coworker. its a 1980's Nishiki Olympic model. came with a Mavic MA40 front wheel, a Wolber Super champion modele 58 rear wheel with shimano gears and hubs, sugino crank and seat post, champion handlebars and a custom stem. not bad for free?
i already stripped the brakes off it and polished it back up. now im ready to convert it

< Works at a Starbucks.
Had the bike parked inside the store today as the cleaners were pressure washing the patio, had a 60year old guy enter the store:
"So who goes to the velodrome"
I sheepishly raise my hand, and then proceeded to explain the new craze of track bikes on the street.
He didn't quite understand at first, but then thought about it, and appreciated what we do with them nowadays. He then said my bike looked 'fantastic' and well put together which made me smile.
So I suppose it's nice to know that the generations can be bridged sometimes
