bought a motor (B18c), compression check was fine. put in motor. never was able to boost it because with the p28 ecu/fmu/etc it would lean out at top so i left it alone. had a friend do a valve adjustment. he said it drove fine. i told him too bad you can't drive it hard 'cause when you do it goes FULL lean and i didn't wanna burn up a piston. he was dead silent after that. also, i seemed to always have oil slowly leaking from the head or cam from cam seal...
sooo, i have the car tuned, hondata.. all the good stuff. car runs fine, but it does have smoke coming out while on the dyno (black). we figure the motor has been sitting for a while and it's just "clearing itself out". car seems to drive fine after.
i drive and drive and THINK i can start seeing some white smoke out of the back when i get on the gas hard and start boosting. i start thinking head gasket.
i park the car for a week while i wait for a starter. i also decide to do an oil change... but like a dumbass i put almost FIVE QUARTS OF OIL (brain was off that day)and drive around for a day..
i notice the car idles low ( 800rpm as oppposed to the 1050 per Hondata). i pop the hood and notice an oily residue on the fuel rail under the filter i have on the breather tube... i can also see what looks like a slight amount of white smoke from the filter. just like my B16 did when it died.
i take the car home and drain a bunch of oil. then i add a quart so i have the proper amount. when i pull out the funnel, i see "evil white residue" on it. i check the oil fill cap. a think, white paste on the inside of the cap. great. headgasket, right?
so, all is done. i cut fuel and do a compression check. starting with # 4 here are the numbers:
210/220/210/90 . yup. 90!!!
so, i am needing opinions. the white residue on the cap and compression tell me a head gasket. but the oil tells me rings. could it be both? could the oil just be because i had WAY too much oil and it was escaping out?
anyone? this sucks. ***. the motor hasn't been driven on all that hard. only since i had it tuned, which was only in November, or something like that.
maybe the guy that drove it went crazy whith it being lean and killed it for me?
thanks, in advance.
JDM B18C, stock internals.
*EDIT* did another comp. test
compression SHOT up to 90 and never went higher. indicating a head gasket.
BUT. when i added oil, it shot up to about 110 or 120, then gradually went up to 180, like it was a ring.
WTF??
i'm thinking it STARTED as a head gasket.. and i didn't catch it in time.. so it damaged my #1 rings??

Do a leak down test on the motor that will tell you exactly where it is coming from. Also the black smoke is running rich not from burning oil.

what about the smoke from the vent on the valve cover? it's a white/grayish color.

haha. join the club. i think it's funny 'cause the motor had probs when i first put it in.
