y my built engine smokes?
ok i have a fully built block from gem. its a b20a similiar to a h23 the reason i say that is cause we use the sae rods. well when i get on it pretty hard i see smoke coming out my exhaust. i really cant tell exactly what color it is but ir looks greyish/whitish. its running n/a right now but plan to boosted in a few months. the engine as about 2500-3000 miles i guestimate any useful info will be helpful thanks.

any motor is gonna smoke when you get on it. Just keep checking the oil and coolant level. But vtec is gonna consume a little oil.

Re: y my built engine smokes? (jdmhonda)
my car smokes all the time when i get on it. but it is colder out and i know its just water vapor. i have no cat and 3 inch exhaust all the way back. its just due to the vapor pressure of the water (by-product of combustion) and the outside temperature
but check your levels and you can even test your coolant to see if it has traces of exhaust gases in it
good luck

You guys can't just go spouting off "head gasket" for everything....
When I built my engine, I got the rings "inline" on cyl #1 which was doing something similar to what you describe. Pulled the slug and got everything straightened out. No problems since.
Check out your plugs, get a flash light and look down into the cylinder too. Your plugs will tell all.
You could also try different weight oils. Drain oil and check for coolant. Look for oil in coolant.
Could also be valve seals and or guides...

My car smokes when I get on it, white smoke. And I haven't touched the coolant since last time I changed it, the level has not changed, and compression is 210 accross.

Have you checked to see if there is any smoke that comes out of the head when you give it gas? If there is smoke coming out of there, then it's your rings. Before automatically assuming it's the headgasket is there:
1. Oil leaking from the block anywhere?
2. Oil in your coolant?
Best thing to do would just break down and do a compression/leakdown test.

Plugs should be tan/light brown, correct me if i'm wrong but don't white plugs mean a lean condition. Like some other guy said, vtec consumes a little oil. I am assuming this is a b20vtec, though you didn't say that. How do you know you're a quart low, that's a lot for a Honda, did you measure it when you changed it or something. If your oil was black it's not your headgasket. You just running a stock dohc vtec ecu or what?

Yes if the Spark Plugs are white then it's running too lean. Now if there are specs of white on them that means the motor is detonating.....

the oil is black. there is no coolant in the oil. my car is a non-vtec. its a b20a the first b-series made. thanks for telling my car is running lean. i dont see no leaks. should i get a leak down test down first? and if everything looks good with that. then the next thing that it could be is the head right? cause a leakdown test would check rings correct me if im wrong.

Re: (Bulldogg83)
a leakdown is really the only way your gonna find your problem...ckin this and that wont help..just do the leakdown and get back to us...BTW i have also built my B20a and had a simular issue, my valve seals kept poppin of the valve guides and letting oil into the cylinder...i used OEM honda seals...but apparently honda dosent use the metal jacket type seal anymore so there a newer style...all rubber and they blow...i found some metal jacketed ones and havent had a problem since...most likely isnt your prob ...but i did have that issue...
