lightweight flywheel
my friend said that when he bought a lightweight flywheel for his turbo civic, it felt like he lost lots of torque especially in first gear. i was wondering if anyone had the same opinion. i was considering a 8.8lbs flywheel, but i'm not sure if it's worth it. thanks.

Re: lightweight flywheel (18gLUDE)
It does take a few more rpm to get an engine with a light flywheel moving.A heavy flywheel is slower to accelerate, and is slower to decelerate. This slower deceleration (flywheel effect) is what helps the car from stalling out when you let out the clutch.

WTH are u talking about the engine spins faster with a light flywheel cause of the lighter rotating mass..........And i'm sure u'll have a Few people tell u that it will cause u to fall out of boost easier, don't listen to them they just can't drive.....

If you read my whole post you would know WTH I'm talking about. Its the fact that the rev.s drop quickly that make it harder to pull away from a stop.People say and think incorrectly that its because the engine lost torque. If you watch someone try and drive their car for the first time after adding a lighter flywheel they will stall it a few times before they bring the rpms up higher (more throttle) before they release the clutch.

Re: lightweight flywheel (NJIN BUILDR)
i understand that part but u said it takes more rpm to get a lcar with a lighter flywheel moving.. that makes no sense...... i know what ur saying about stalling and thats truebut it could also be that people install better clutches at the same time and they engauge harder........

I've read up alot on light flywheels, as I plan on getting one with my next clutch change.
and what Glenn is saying is true.
lighter flywheel means the engine has an easier/quicker time revving up AND down
some people with really light FW's even said that if they just let the clutch out and let it rev down into idle, their car would just stall out on them!
But most people said that it is true, you'll need to give it alittle more gas from a stop, and it'll drop revs quicker imbetween shifts, but all in all it's really not a huge change, and definetely something you'll get used to.
the benifits of the LW FW outweigh the downside.

Re: (Tad)
I have a fidanza 8.5lbs flywheel and it takes alittle while to get use to it but after i drove my car for about five minutes i had already found the sweet spot to where it wouldnt stall. If you can understand what your car tells you then you shouldnt have any problems adjusting to it. And when people say your revs drop to fast it is cause they havent had one in their own car cause they dont drop far enough to make a difference. I can keep mine in vtec without even shifting fast and i still have my stock redline. So i would recommend that you get one you will not be disappointed if you do!!!
