Default wrx turbo

Have a friend that will let me have his wrx sti turbo, with like 30k miles, for dirty cheap...what modifications would be needed to put it in a 97' ex?

Assuming you already have a turbo setup for the car, just change the downpipe & manifold flanges, and put the right fittings on your oil lines.

Now if you DON"T have a turbo setup, you'll have to go directly to the F.I. FAQ thread stickey'd at the top of this subforum. That is not the kind of basic question you should be asking. It's been answered COUNTLESS times.

I dont have a turbo setup, but no thats not what I meant....Im aware of the parts I need. My question was more regarding the manifold, most people Ive heard that are running this have used a hf manifold so do I need that or can I use any manifold? I plan on using a tial wg as well so hoping the manifold is compatible with that.

Also can a stock y8 block handle the wrx turbo? I know its a pretty small turbo so Im hoping I dont have to completely do an overhaul on the internals. The engine in average shape...not great but not bad either. Planning on running 12-15 psi since it wont be a daily driver.

On a VF39, even an HF manifold won't help you man. That exhaust manifold has to be custom made from the triangular flange that is used for that turbine housing on that turbocharger.

My advice, sell it to WRX owner who needs it, and not an STi owner.

So customize the HF manifold and Im set? The same could be done with with a ramhorn right? Got someone else that has one laying around for cheap as well...and what about the tial wg. Any customization needed for that?

No your going to need a straight up CUSTOM manifold. Subaru's use a 3 bolt flange - not going to work well AT ALL with anything other than a custom made manifold and the correct flange..

You will spend twice the money to get a "free" turbo that is inefficient to work if you want, but you will not see any results from it. Give that to a Subaru person.

Actually on a Y8 it would be a badass turbo... Sadly you will be so far below its efficiency range (not running enough boost to make it worthwhile) on 91-93 octane... <<< Unless you have forged pistons and running E85... >>>

Don't waste your money.. Pick it up sell it make a buck - buy your friend a case of beer - and save up for a small frame GT series turbo.

This is my first turbo and Honda for that matter, so I just want to get my feet wet...not really planning on building a monster or anything like that. Just confirmed that its not the sti turbo by the way, it came out of a regular wrx.

I'll probably go with:

vitara pistons
eagle rods
oem valves
oem valve springs
tial wg
ebay intercooler and bov
hondata or crome

What kind of numbers should I expect at 15-20 psi or so?

Dont they sell adapters or something, say for instance I have a t25 manifold...which is what a 4-bolt flange I believe. Use it with an adapter that has the 4-bolt flange on one side and and a 3-bolt flange on the other side, couldnt I just have that custom made instead of an entire manifold?

Why not use something suitable for your car and not a Subaru? Several people that know a thing about some things hinted to you to get something else.......

Im kind of on a budget for one, and besides just about any turbo can be made to fit any car with some customization...so I dont really think its accurate to say this turbo isnt really suitable for my car. Like I said though I just want to get my feet wet right now and glad I managed to get this turbo for dirt cheap, not looking to build a monster or anything like that. I figure I'll run it a couple of months, save up some money, get a bigger t3 turbo, ditch the adapter and bolt it right up.

I looked around and turns out there are adapters, so I could go ahead and use a hf manifold with my td04l turbo. The guy is checking if they have t3 or t25 to td04l adapters though since Id rather use those type of manifolds than an hf one.

This amount of customization is not worth the use of the turbo. It's like spending $600 to save $50 for a free turbo.. time to get your priorities straight, and realize that "free" is almost never actually "free"..

this man speaks the truth. get a turbo off of a turbo coupe (t3 garret) or some form of dsm turbo. those are easy to adapt and use on a honda...

Where are you getting $600 from? The adapter itself is $60 and the HF manifold customized with a wg flange is getting thrown in for an extra $40...Im not by any means spending tons of money. Like I said it will be a nice first turbo for me, I'll use it a couple of months, save some money, buy a bigger turbo and better manifold and bolt it right up. Have tons of civic owners I know that Im sure could use my current turbo and the HF+adapter, sell it for $100-$150 and I'll be reimbursed all my money.

Allright peeps, Im hitting the downstretch...nearly got all my **** together. Just need the downpipe and hondata. Although it will be on low boost, while I save up for new rods and pistons. But Im wondering, for the downpipe will I need another adapter or are there civic specific downpipes already made for this turbo? There's 5-bolt downpipes Ive seen but not sure if theyll fit. Here's a gasket of it:

I think we're done here, unfortunately. Good luck with your build, sir.
