Would you do it all over again????
Alright for you boosted people out there, would you in fact invest the cash and do what you have done all over again?
I have owned a GS-T before and I really liked the power characteristics of a turbo car. I love my Si, but it just needs more power and is getting up in miles. Now I have the money to get a good GReddy setup w/ J&S going (Im guessing around $4500 or so with supporting stuff). I don't think it would blow up or anything running stock boost and especially with the J&S. But is it worth it to sink ~5k into a car worth 10k?
My question is for you guys that have been down that road before, is it a worthwhile investment and would you do it again? Or would you start with a platform that is turbo charged from the factory?
Hoping these responses will help aid me in my decisions...
Thanks,
Brad

When you have close to 20k in the car, you begin to wonder
If you only have 3-5k in it, you will certainly be happy with your investment. Atleast until the engine goes south.
Best of luck!

I would totally do it again, I have about 12-13k in my turbo and motor alone
and enjoy every minute of it. There is times when stuff gets you frustrated
and traction is always a issue but it gives ya something to improve on. There
are probaly a few things I would have done different but I don't regret any of
it and could never go back.

I will add one more thing; I am sure you already know, but do not plan on ever getting your money back out of the car. This has to be a personal investment on something you want. Don't think it will improve the value of the car.
Again, best of luck!

Amen brother that is a 100% true statement. My friend a Sti owner is baffled at
home cheap some modified car owners sell there cars for....I told him it's not
about making money...You have to do it cause you want to....if you look at it
money wise it's a typically always a loss.

Re: Would you do it all over again???? (Mikes01GSR)
True, good points. I know about the money thing too. With a few of my previous cars I have lost quite a bit of money, but I didn't look at it like that. I think the car would be fine with the initial setup and run fine. But the really worry is how much I would get into if I ever got to rebuilding the engine.
My current decision is this: to add a few things and a Turbo kit to this car now (which then I would pretty much have to keep it because of the investment), or wait until I graduate in June (I'll be so glad!!) and take the 5k + more I would use now and through a downpayment on something.

Really, building a turbo honda is not that exepensive in relation to some other
cars especially when you consider the reliablity of them. Some cars will always
have problems but I've seen boosted cars from the factory then when power is
added still have typical problems i.e some subies and dsm's...It's all prefrence
in the end.

well, the going rates are circa the following (these will vary by vendor to vendor)
CP pistons are usally around $495 for a set..(there are cheaper ones)
Eagle rods are around $299 for a set..
a local shop said labor for installation would only be like $300..so thats cool..

Re: Would you do it all over again???? (RedRacer)
Depends really.
I assembled my own block, if you pay someone that is usually 150.00 more for a reputable shop.
Rods-300.00
Pistons, wrist pins, rings- 450
sleeve/block guard- varies from 75-1400.00
bearings-110.00
New seals, gaskets- 200+
Oil Pump and water pump-150+
Balancing/blueprinting-3-400
I would say if you want to do a decent build and use quality parts plan to spend atleast 2k on the block.
Don't get me wrong, there are ways around that. Used parts (then relaibitity becomes an issue)
Your best bet is to hunt around the for sale threads to buy stuff people have purchased to build there cars, then it all feel through. They usually will sell parts much cheaper as they need money.
DON'T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM, one day you may be in that boat too.
I would honestly say for a decent turbo car you should plan to have 5-7k in it. For a reliable turbo'ed car (I use this term relatively) Plan to spend 8-12,000.00.
As everyone has said, it is a passion and an addictive one at that.

Me 2. I wish I had sleeved my engine and built it with a custom turbo kit instead of buying a bolt on Drag 3 kit and wanting more.

Screw puttin 4k into your si...keep the Si...go buy a 1G GSX for 2k...and put another 2k into it...let your gsx be your racer and keep the Si to drive daily...that's just my opinion though.

I was at the same problem before I boosted my gsr. I am glad i turbo'd but on the other hand it sucks because i'm broke as hell. It just kinda depends on your priorities and how much money you can actually "lose" if you want to call it that.

After all is said and done Ill be around 10k like everyone else. Would I do it again? **** no. I have gotten to the point where I want a luxury car and want to save up for a house and for all that comes with that. 10k is a nice size for a downpayment on a house.

Very true, it depends on one's priorities and budget.

Re: Would you do it all over again???? (RedRacer)
All you got to remember is that a boosted honda is great fun to drive,
it may cost 1000's more then a car that is boosted from stock
But when you over take a supercar when racing the face on the person in that car is PRICELESS
Just think of it that way..

Re: Would you do it all over again???? (NOSED_CRX_VTEC)
My only regrets so far is not deciding to go turbo A LONG time ago. The misc. parts/components always intimidated me, but for the most part I haven't had any real serious issues (knocks on wood). Research is your friend. Best of luck. I have around 4K in my setup including a piston/rod motor with hondata.

No. Manufacturers are building more and more quick cars every year. Front wheel drive sucks.
However, it's too late. I wouldn't get anywhere near the money I've invested in the car if I were to sell it. So, I'm just going to spend more!
