Default Why use 93 octain with turbo apps?

Hey i know you are supposed to use 93 octain with a turbo/supercharger, but why if the engine is made for 89 octain why would it change? would the engine just run better with 93 or is it a must?
thanks

it is more resistant to detonation.

The octane rating of gasoline tells you how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. when the gas ignites it causes "knock" which is bad for your motor. it ruduces the chances of "knock" and detonation

i thought the octane rating was the Resistance to detonation?

You could run 89 Im sure, you would just have to tune conservative and wont be able to make as much power out of your motor. Just like race gas allows you to make a **** load more power than pump gas.

I'm no expert, but i thought it was the burn rate is faster on lower octane making it more prone to detonation. If anyone can clarify what exact is the octane rating asid from the chemical difference. We might both be right

^^^I'm with him

Lower octane = 'easier' to burn

the octane rating , tells ya how much pressure and heat the fuel can take before it self ignites...

cheap gas will detonate under turbo since it cant handle a lot...
a turbo heats up and compresses air a lot, and if u have gas that cant be controlled, u going t blow stuff up
if u have a fuel that can withstand the pressure heat and can be controlled, thats what u want

you should just run teh highest octane that is available to you, within reason. Just run "premium" which in MN is 92-93 octane. The station by my house carries race gas which is like 108 or something, but it is not needed for daily driving.

Common mis conception.. Check out Mase's tunning discussion. The octane is directly related to how well it resists detonation. Which some could say is burning slower or faster...but I just stick to the first explanation.

We have 87, 89, 90, 92, 93.5, 100 unleaded octane and 110 leaded octane at local gas stations in MN

The low the octane the faster the fuel does burn.. But also the lower resistance it has to pressure.. Running a fuel that has a lower octane will not make any more power than higher octane when tuned correctly.. But lower octane will pre-ignite with the higher temps and pressures that go with boost and high-compression..

Consider yourself lucky! I just paid $6.50/gallon for Sunoco 100
