why does my car turn off on a hard shift to 2nd gear?
Ok so i hit up the drag strip today, launch, cut 2.0-2.1 60's on drag radials, nothing special, spinning first the whole way...bouncing off limiter...shift to 2nd, clutch grabs, and then the car just shuts off, check engine light on...
so im like oh ****!
so i put the clutch in, take it out of gear, and then the car starts up again
wtf? it did it 5-6 times out of 15 runs...sometimes if i shifted a tad bit slower to 2nd it wouldnt turn off, but then if i tried to shift anywhere near as fast as i could, as soon as 2nd grabbed, the car would just turn off...any ideas?
its a stock LS w/ hondata and a maxrev kit...

Re: why does my car turn off on a hard shift to 2nd gear? (Tinker219)
see its funny, its not a real cel, it just goes on when the car shuts off, otherwise, i dont have a cel...like when it starts back up, no cel, car runs fine
what i think is happening is that because im bouncing off the limiter, when i shift, its at that point where the fuel is being cut so the car turns off...feasible??

You hit the boost limiter. Basically you hit the max amt of boost that was set by your tuner or set by the map sensor.

ekb18c is probably right, but what you describe ive also scene, when the battery post terminal conector are not tight, and power is lost momentarily

sounds like a grounding/ electrical issue.
my 2 cents. although I dont know how hondata reacts when you exceed the max boost the map sensor can read... so that may be something.

i can agree with that or bad grounds i had plennty of them
i ran all new grounds and extra ones to the block and trans from the neg terminal and it runs better starts better and everything

Definatly an electrical issue.
Disconnect your distributor connectors from the wire harness, blow a good amount/pressure of air into them (air blower from a compressor works good). Then clip them all back together firmly. Check the ground from the frame to the tranny.
If that doesn't fix it then i have absolutely no idea.
I was experiencing this EXACT same thing. if i get a nice good launch then shift hard into 2nd it would stutter hardcore, and feel like an ignition cut.... twice or three times it shut off and i had to pull over and act like i knew what i was doing, then it would start (i just pushed all the wires around lol).
hope i helped ya

Re: why does my car turn off on a hard shift to 2nd gear? (tegasaurus)
thanks for the suggstions
boost limiter makes sense, i was tuned for 12.5 psi but iturned it up to 14, and i think boost limit was set to 14.5 so maybe thats what it is...how come it wouldnt cut boost out in first gear tho? or did it cut it in first, but by the time it cut it, i was already shifting to 2nd?

i had the same problem with a dsm and it was becouse the guy put a battery in the car with differnt terminals and the pos side would hit the hood short out and kill the motor then come back on
thats another to check to see if you have the right bat in the car and make shure it is not hitting the hood

might sound weird, but how many engine grounds do you have?
i got stranded 40 miles away($200 tow fee) because my ground strap broke, and it was my only one...
of course I didnt know it at the time either...

i have the starter ground and the valvecover ground
if it was a bad ground, wouldnt the problem be consistant? on the way home i did a hard 1-2 but not from bouncing off the limiter and it was fine...

If you are using a stock map sensor then it's hondata's boost cut.
Why didnt it cut on first gear? Well it might be because you didn't hit the boost limit on first gear.

drive the car on the street and roll into it and see if it cuts
and then try a hard shifting
and maybe when you hit the rev limiter the motor jumps and makes all the ground or pos conection come loose some where
run an extra ground if you dont have one to the trans from the neg terminal of the battery not just from the body

Re: (bottlefedb18c1)
i have a GM 3 bar, im pretty sure my boost was only at ~13 lbs, boost cut from what i recall was 14.5 psi
im going to check my ground and run some more see if that helps next weekend
such a bizzare problem..maybe i'll try to get in-car video

Re: (Short Round)
i've hit boost cut before in my car, it didn't shut off however. What happened is that the car just jerks like it hits a limiter and the cel blinks for a second. Turned down the boost a bit and it never happens again.

i had the same issue, i was set to 9 with a boost cut @ 10 lbs, so turns out if i floor 1st gear and spin and then bang second, as soon as it grabs i would get that THUDD!!! from the boost cut set on the hondata... basically it happens so fast that it catches up in 2nd, since 1st gear basically takes 2 secs to spin out. but my car wouldnt shut off i would just hit the cut off .. your issue might be a safety since your going way past your boost cut setting.

Re: why does my car turn off on a hard shift to 2nd gear? (chameleon)
When I installed a 3" exhaust on my car from a 2.25, I turned the boost controller down a notch and went for a test. Well I was suppose to boost 15psi but it turned into 20 really quick and then hondata cut it off, but nowhere did it ever shut the car completely down. It happened a couple times till i got my settings back right. The boost cut feature on hondata should not shut down the car completely, just cut the boost off to prevent damage. Thank God for that too!!

i found out my problem (nearly identical to yours) was the ground on top of the thermostat housing. Make sure you check that one out

there's no doubt that your hitting the hondata boost cut..
