Whats the penalty for getting caught with a turbo?
Hey everyone, im planning to boost next year and was wondering if i was pulled over by a cop and they ask me to pop my hood, how severe is the penalty? Is it a fix it ticket? Would my car get towed? I dont know if it makes a difference but i live in CA.

I think that makes all the difference since you are in cali, hear they are very strict out there. I don't know what the penalty is, someone out there I am sure has had it happen to them and they can respond. But I think they cut off your hands.

I recall something about a "gross polluter" ticket? and a $2500 fine? I think that's in cali anyhow...

they will just send u to the ref or u could just pay the ticket and the only fine they have that cost anywhere near 2500 is for not having a cat or having a hallowed out cat and i think that fine is 1500 to 2000

I would suggest getting a carb legal kit if this is an issue for you. What are your goals. The Greddy kit might be more than enough for what you want(doubt it but worth a shot)

Can't you simply refuse to pop your hood? I mean, it's the same as refusing them to search your car. You don't have to allow them, and I doubt they're gonna waste the time to go through the hassle to getting a warrant to do so.

By the book you cannot even upgrade a Turbo in a car that came with one from the factory... so I'm pretty sure adding one to a car that never had it can't be legal. they don't need a warrant, just probable cause... and they can make that up with any story just like how we make up stories about how we weren't really speeding.

i had my hood popped open.. the cop let me go cuz he said he wanted to learn... or some bs like that so he gave me a front license plate fix it. 
I almost pissed in my pants when he told me to pop the hood.. this was in cali

that can't be right. if it were then lots of people i know would be totally screwed.
i'm pretty sure as long it passes the sniffer your good to go. and if it doesn't you gotta prove it.

thanks for the all the replies, i really hope its just going to a ref and getting signed off for it. im most likely going with a drag III kit from importparts.com since their having a deal on them and like 2mins away from me. i was considering the Greddy kit at first cause of it being CARB legal, but i kept hearing how it wasn't very much power for the money. Also correct me if im wrong but as soon as you install a BOV its no longer CARB legal right. I was thinking about going custom, but im still a noob with turbos so ill start out with a kit. My goal this year will be 200+hp/180tq and mid 13s then from there ill see how it is and go from there.
