Default What turbo is this?!?!?

Hey guys just made a HT account although I've been lurking for years. I mainly am on TeamIntegra.net here is my build log http://www.team-integra.net/forum/20...ilovers-4.html

I bought the car with the turbo in it, owner said it was a 6262 precision. I recently pulled the turbo and know that it's most likely not.. The only markings are .60 AIR and .63 AR, besides a precision turbo stamp. I've looked into it for hours and can't find out what turbo it is. Just entering the world of forced induction so I'm still learning! Can anyone help me out?!?

I'm at work and can't see the pictures right now, but the .60 and .63 are aspect ratios (A/R's) that denote relative size of the housings. It doesn't lend much insight into what the dimensions of the turbocharger are.

Learn about Turbo A/R

If you have a micrometer, the best way to determine what you have is to measure the wheels.

I think it's a T3 if that's relevant?

It is, but only sort of. Having a T3 or T4 footprint doesn't really dictate whether or not it's a 6262 because i'm fairly certain they come in both varieties

Just from looking at the housing I would guess that it's not a 6262, I think that it may be in the Precision SC line. SC60 im guessing?
Does this look right?

take off the comp housing and measure the compressor wheel inducer and exducer. google "turbo inducer" to find out. you can't find out what the turbo is just by looking at it... unless of course it had a label on it, which i doubt it does.

Thanks for the responses. What makes you think it's a SC61? Just curious

stop playin the bs guessing game, you're wasting your damn time. I had the same comp housing on a turbo I had, it was 56mm inducer, and another one was 58mm. It can be anything from 56 and up, looks like a ~60mm wheel though, just measure it! its so easy.. Go buy a cheap set of calipers at harbor freight for 20$. Return em if youre that broke, but they always come in handy. just be sure to take off the housing slow, same when installing it

yup as previously stated there are numerous different turbos that use the same housing. The wheel sizes determine the characteristics more so then the housings ever will.

Im guessing you bought this used.... while your in there inspect for any possible damage,

I bought it used and it was already installed in the car. Driven on it for about 2 years and no problems. I did check for shaft play and there is none at all. Anything else I should look for? I just ordered the digital caliper from harbor freight so I will be able to tell exactly what I have.

I just thought it looked a bit oily. I really havent done this so I cant tell you I beleive you need to inspect the shaft on the inside for wear

It's because of an oil leak elsewhere, at my valve cover gasket I was thinking. I've replaced that since, so we'll see if the leak has stopped. The seal on the turbo seems to be fine and the shaft is in very good shape, almost brand new

Quit guessing and start measuring.

Whelp.. Maybe I can help. I'm only going from what I can see here, so when you get your caliper in, you can confirm whether or not I'm wrong.

Exhaust wheel:
Definitely not a 62mm exducer that's used in the 6262. (I have no idea why this guy lied to you like that, but 6262 Precisions only came in their 2618 billet wheel format.)

From the blade count, blade profile, size relative to the turbine housing, and just the age of the turbo itself (Precision used to use their logo like that on their turbine housings until 2006 when they change their location of them,) this is a 56mm exducer wheel commonly referred to as a "Stage 3" in Turbonetics terminology.

These exhaust wheels go do about 500whp at their MAXIMUM rotational speed, giving about 18-22lbs/min turbine gas flow (depending upon A/R housing). In comparison, a GT3076R N23 60mm turbine wheel has a 54mm exducer, but because of its better profile, can easily reach over 26lbs/min gas turbine flow rate.

So, strike 1 for the "6262" lie you were told.

Compressor wheel / Compressor cover

For the compressor cover, that's Precision's 1st cast rendition compressor cover using a "green sand" casting; it works, but kept customization options limited. You've got literally thousands of these covers still being used on hybrid and custom created turbos around right now. The .60A/R is a common A/R size for MANY different compressor wheel configurations, but again, from what I can see based upon the age, profile of the wheel, the backplate and relative size to the compressor cover, I'd say you're more in the smaller SC ("Sport Compact") range of turbos, which means you have your run of the mill 50,57, or 60 "trim" turbos that have anywhere from a 54mm inducer to 58mm inducer size. Either way, the exducer on the compressor wheel is probably anywhere from 74.73mm to 75mm.

The compressor backplate is definitely a Garrett, and not a Precision or Turbonetics which used a billet backplate.

This means that you more than likely have a:

SC50
SC54
SC34
SC44

But this is from what I can see now. Your caliper (in millimeters, please) will confirm the sizes.

I hope that gave some glimmer of information.

Just the looks, I had one that looked just like it. and like Shodan said it can be any of the SC series because they pretty much look the same, measurements is gonna the deciding factor.

Hey guys just to finish what I started here,
Inducer - 53.85
Exducer - 76.20
= ~50 trim turbo

Thanks HT
